Gotta love the 72hr rush...

Out of pure curiosity and boredom, I headed over to the local Chevy dealership to check out the SS/SC. I previously, or still do, have a 01 GTI VR6 with A LOT of mods so I wasn't really expecting much out of the SS.

Long story short, I test drove one and loved it. You can actually drive this car comfortably but really get on it when need be. I was impressed. I then asked them to run my credit to see if I qualitied for this 0% financing. Thats when things got interesting, I did qualify and I also get a discount through work as a "supplier".

I ended up buying a black SS/SC fully loaded with the LSD and Recaros etc for a damn good price and great monthly payments.

Overall, this car is great. Its comfortable and sporty at the same time, something my modded GTI could never do. Plus wth the stage 2 kit, I could hang with most of the sport compacts on the street these days.

I'll resize some pics later to post up.

GM has partnerships with different companies that "supply" them good or services. FOr instance, I work for Citigroup and I'm sure they help with GM's finances, therefore all Citigroup employees get the supplier discount.

Right on! I got one just like it in December, I love driving mine. I often find myself taking the long way to work. Also, sometimes I just pass my house on the way home. There is a 6 mile stretch to the next town that I can hit 120+mph. Have fun and welcome!

how do you like the Cobalt? I was looking into buying one around this time last year but figured just coming out of high school with a crap job wasn't getting me one... I found a 2000 gti vr6 with 56k on it for 7,300 and I couldn't have been happier with that. Oh, turbo to come by the end of next month. But how do you like the cobalt compared to the gti other than comfortability ? (if thats even a word)

I've seen many stories where people go in just to test drive and then they end up buying!

Thanks guys, I appreciate the warm welcome

Let me atleast lay down some ground work before I compare the GTI and the SS. The first being my car has 63,000 on it and it runs better than the day I bought it. I've also had it dyno'd and its making more power to the wheels than vw claims to the crank which helps. The GTI also has EXTENSIVE suspension work, big brake kit, sticky tires and adjustable Koni's (rebound). That car was killer on turns and I used to auto-x it...read as beat the snot out of it. I also put Recaro's in it that were from the special edition 337 and had some other interior goodies.

Now for the comparison, the SS can not hang with my GTI on corners, but the above explains that. Stock for stock however, the SS would wipe the floor with it, it's got a very nice solid base. As far as acceleration, the SS is quicker on paper, but the GTI had a nicer torque curve and just feels more powerful. It also has that amazing VR6 sound to it that can't be copied by ANYTHING (I'm going to miss that part a lot). Braking, after I did all that work, the GTI would win again, but it's not fair comparing it at that point.

As for comfort, the SS is definately a comfortable car, but the interior is not its strong suit, although it does beat out the SRT-4. VW's always have nice interiors, their buttons and great, the layout is excellent, fit and finish is superb and the parts used are not excessively cheap. The SS unfortunately is. One instance is the e-brake lever, its one of the cheepest feeling things I've felt, and the vanity mirror is a hinged door that doesn't have a light on it, not to mention the sunvisors them self and pretty cheap looking. I also miss the VW sunroof controls and the fact that it opened ALL the way inside the headliner where as the SS puts the panel above the roof (which i think looks sportier) Another issue I have with the SS is the lack of center armrest with the Recaros, although it does make sense, it would probably get in the way of my elbow while shifting. And the last major gripe I have is steering column is not telescoping, as an auto-xer I like my wheel to be in a certain place in relation to everything else and it's just not there in this car.

Overall, I grea out of the GTI, it's a mean curve machine and has some ***** when it comes to off line performance and passing, but to get that car to the performance level a stage 2 would get the SS to would cost me 5-6k and it would have to be in the form of a turbo which would kill the linear pull that I loved, not to mention it would stil be a one-legger around corners (an LSD costs a good 2k after tranny rebuild). One really pulled me in is the fact that the SS is great stock, there are only a couple things I'd like to do such as rear sway and stage 2, but thats really it. The car drives comfortably and can still perform, everytime i hit a bump, my teeth dont fall out.

I have to close with this, the GTI will always have a place in my heart, but its time to move on. THe SS fills the void very well.

BTW how did you get such a good deal on that gti? I'm asking for 12k for mine.

I was at work browsing the boston craigslist and I saw it, I was always looking for one, and even better it was a vr6. The guy selling it was trying to get it off his hands before wednesday and it was Sunday already, so only a few more days left to get my hands on this. The only night I could look at it was the night I found it online. I called my dad from the work phone and my father told me it was alright that we check it out that night. I walked into the boss's office and told her I wasn't feeling well and left for the day. Got home, got my dad in the truck and we went to check it out. Originally he was looking for $8,000. He was going to trade it in at vw and they said they'd give him 7,000 for it. My dad looked, we drove, and my dad loved it. We got the VIN, went home and carfaxed it and called him up and got him down to 7,300...
a 5 year old car with 56k miles, leather interior and the works for 7,300? and its a vr6?! what a deal.
sorry for the long post. Good luck with the sale man.

Hello all,

I just purchased my Cobalt SS Supercharged last Monday and received the 0% financing too. I traded in my 03 Grand Am GT/SCT. This is my first stickshift, but I seem to be getting the hang of it. My husband and I are really enjoying the car.
