Help with Engine ID

New member trying to identify an engine. I recently pulled a (or what I thought is a) 2.4 LE5 from an 07' HHR. I saw the VVT solenoids and the emissions tag said 2.4. What I was looking for so I took it home.

After getting it home I found, written in red paint pen, on a part of the block "09 Cobalt". At some point the original engine may have been swapped with a junkyard engine. 09' Cobalts did not come with a 2.4 LE5, but a LAP 2.2 (Non-SS).

Therefore I am trying to find out if this is in a 2.4 LE5 or 2.2 LAP. I don't just trust the junkyard paint mark.

The head is casting # 12600788, which matches another LE5 sitting in the garage, but the LE5 and LAP share the same head it looks like from my research.

The block is casting # 12577748, which I cannot link to a 2.4 or 2.2, I see hits for both displacement and that casting #. Unless they make 1 casting and just punch the bore out wider for the 2.4L?

There is a partial VIN on the front of the valve cover and oil filter housing: T806210867 The last few digits are somewhat illegible, but that is what I could make out.

There is what looks like a date lasered onto the front of the block above the timing cover of 7/21/08. I don't know when the model year begins/ ends so it could be an 08' (or early 09')? Which if an 08' it could be from a Cobalt Sport which came with the LE5.

This engine is being paired with the E67 ECU and harness pulled from the same HHR and being tuned/ swapped into a completely different non-GM vehicle so knowing exactly what I have is critical to getting this project going.

Thanks

Measure the stroke. 2.2 should be 3.7" and 2.4 should be 3.9"

I am trying to identify without tearing into the engine (then accruing costs in gaskets, bolts, etc to build back up), but you raise a good point. I need to pull the pan to swap to a modded pan I made. I should be able to get a dial indicator through the slots in the lower block to measure the stroke. I was thinking the bore was the only difference, which could not be accurately measured without pulling the head.

Pull the valve cover and get the part numbers off the cam gears. That should be enough to tell.

If you are pulling the pan off, get the part number off the crank.

The numbers on the cam gears don't match some LE5 cams I have around. PN 12621505

Smoking gun was the stroke. Measured to 3.7" on the dot, therefore 2.2L. Thanks for the tip.

Something I found interesting, a junk LE5 block I have laying around has oil squirters and it is from a similar year (08' or 09'). This block does not have the oil squirters.

Going to sell the LAP and pickup a boneyard LE5. If anyone is looking for a good condition LAP in the Phoenix area I will cut you a really good deal.
