how accurate is the economy mpg guage?
I was wondering just how accurate is the mpg economy guage for gas mileage? My guage has been reading around 22-24 mpg. But then I would reset it and it would go up to about 27-29 mpg. I dont know which I should believe. Then the next day it will go back down to 22-24. I dont even know why I am getting low mileage like this. I drive normally and dont have a heavy foot. I love everything about this car but the gas mileage. That is the only thing I do not like about it.

yeah youll realize after you go about 30 miles it is accurate. when i baby my car i get 30-32. when i have a heavy foot i get 28-29. i calculated it by gallons of gas to the mileage ive went and it was within a half mile of accurancy. either your is fucked up or you beat the **** out of your car.

I reset mine after every tank. I hand check mine each tank and it is usually about 2 mpg lower than what the computer says. So for me, every time it reads high.

You have to give it time. Checking mine after every fill up and comparing it to pen and paper calculation, I'm within 0.5mpg with a lot of highway miles and within 0.2mpg with mostly city.

If I am cruising at 55mph with the cruise control on, I'll get around 40~42mpg. But if I go up to 65mph, I only get 36~38mpg. Cruising at 75mph, I only get 31~33mpg. Found out all this when I did my cross country trip. It seems the sweet spot in 5th gear, at least for my car, is around 55mph.
City driving, if I can stay at 40~45mph, I'll get over 30mpg. Only problem is that I'm often stuck at 30mph, whick seems to eat about 5mpg from my average.

mine was accurate within .06 on this last tank of fuel. I went 296 miles on 11.57 gallons in city driving and the readout was 25.5 and calculating ended up 25.58(the readout doesn't go to hundreds so I'd say it's right on the money).
Stopping and starting is what kills the mileage. Idling gives you 0mpg since you are using gas but not moving. When I take off, the instant reading is anywhere from 4-11mpg until I get up to speed. Those are the things that make the readings drop. Also in cooler weather you will get worse mileage since the cool air is more dense and the ecm will add fuel to keep the a/f ratio right.

almost all cars are designed to get best gas mileage at 55mph, because thats where they are required to measure at. well, sort of, but that's the gist of it.
