I hit the Cobalt SS lottery!
I hit the Cobalt SS lottery!
As of today, I am the proud owner of a Black 2008 Cobalt SS (w/sunroof & LSD). When I left the dealership (Richard Hibbard Chevrolet), it had 125 miles on the odometer.
Final price: $15900 out the door.
There are no typos in the above paragraph. Yes, it's a 2008. Yes, it has only 125 miles. Yes, I am her first owner, and my 5yr/100k warranty starts today.
The story starts with good ol' craigslist. I'd been watching it regularly (as well as cars.com, autotrader, places like that) for a Cobalt SS for at least five months now, hoping to find just the right one. I was especially trying to find one in white, but I'd settle for dark blue or silver.
The other day, I ran across an ad on craigslist from RHC for a black 2008. The ad had been run several times for quite a while now and I always brushed it aside because black was on my "anything but" list of colors, and the asking price was in my opinion high for a used '08.
That is, until I realized this was a NEW '08, and the price had come down even further to $18k.
I struck up an email conversation with a sales manager asking why it had been sitting around so long. His response:
At the right price, I was more than willing to break their curse and grow a love for black. So, the next evening, I drove up to the dealership. My father was kind enough to come along as well. I'm sure everyone has stories of their father being a champion car negotiator, mine is no exception. Unfortunately, when we got to the dealership, they were closed. I work two jobs, so the next nugget of free time I had wasn't until next week. Just had to hope it'd be there by then.
The next day, I get a phone call at work from my dad. In a total surprise, he was at the dealership negotiating and had gotten the car down to $16k after taxes and fees. He smugly asked if that deal would be "good enough".
I hadn't even left work that day and was already the owner of a brand new 2008 Cobalt SS. I shall name her... "Hild".
I damn well better figure out something epic to do for father's day.
Edit: Very high complements to Richard Hibbard Chevrolet, too. My father commented that it was the first dealership he's ever been to lately where he comfortably felt the dealer wasn't trying to find a way to screw him. Was quite pleased with the people there.

Yeah its brand new it has like 125 miles and that's from test drives, car shows we have attended w/cars on display. I personally have written up a deal in easily 12 times but it didn't sell because the age group that this car appeals to doesn't have any or enough credit to get a loan from any bank and if they could get a cosigner they didn't have strong enough to cosign for a 19 year old wanting a 25k dollar loan for 6 years. That is why I call it the curse of the Cobalt....lol

I hit the lottery, too, but didn't even know it. I decided I wanted a Cobalt SS, got on Carmax, found an '08 SRTC with 3K miles with LSD for 15.8K. From decision to buy to owner in about 3 days. I didn't find out until I got on here that the price I got was really good.
Congrats on yours! Helluva deal.

bad ass deal man congrats! youll find black is hardest to keep clean but when its shining, its to die for! next is deciding mods! got some brand new lower motor mounts from intense for 35+shipping! lol but have fun man
As for mechanical changes, a K&M filter is a possibility just because it's a simple mod, but otherwise I'm most interested in reliability mods and improvements. Perhaps new charge piping to replace the flimsy plastic one, and new rear rotors & pads since the stock ones are crap.
She's gonna get a lot of heavy use and I want her to last.
It was nighttime when I took her home, so I haven't taken any yet. There's a few at the bottom of the craigslist ad, for so long as the link remains. http://orangecounty.craigslist.org/ctd/1421826510.html

Copycat,lol. And congrats
I was going to take the white one for a spin and get back to you; still might for ***** and giggles. Sounds like a pretty sweet deal but you might want to have them run the VIN just to make sure labor codes aren't void on paint/body-could be one of the "wind damaged" crop like mine. Even so, that's a decent price if there's no visible damage. Also, css.net member "Rukkee" has been kind enough to run VIN's for build info,etc.-you may have one of the early ones. Upper charge tubing can be replaced per bulletin as well.
