installing a muffler backwards?

well, i have one of those straight through mufflers :

and i had it on my old car, it was one of those that has a tip on it, but we cut it off to install it around the middle of the car, well anyways i took it off, it was too quiet. so it sat in my room. i decided to go out and get a cheap custom exhaust done, catback, with that muffler. anyways....we couldnt tell which was the inlet and which was the outlet. its just a straight through muffler. so we just took a guess and put it on there. anyways, its pretty loud(mostly just resonates a lot in between buildings) and i notice as soon as i let off the gas, it rumbles("backfiring but not the actual technical term backfiring") a lot. are there any problems that could arise from installing it wrong if it is wrong?

No it might just be raspy. I lot of exhaust have that popping at the end of the rev. You never had that muffler on a bigger exhaust pipein b4 correct?

I don't see how it would make a difference which way you put it with that kind of muffler.
Its just a straight through tube with perforated holes and fiberglass packed in there isn't it?

yeah i think thats the way it is. and no i had it on 2.25 piping on my focus, and it was really quiet, but it was also installed a lot closer to the middle of the car, as opposed to the half a foot away from the tailpipe it is now, although the guys at the muffler shop said it would be quieter near the tip and louder near header, i dont know who to believe though.

also i believe the exhaust on this car is a lot less restrictive because of how little ammount of bends there are, (its crush bent piping) than on my focus, which had more bends.

If it's a flow through it's not going to really matter. Sometimes the holes in there have a lip that are designed to deflect soundwaves down into the packing, but i can't see them making any real noticeable difference.

well i have noticed a decrease in mpg, not really noticed, i've had the car for a week and never payed attention, but anyways, since it was raining, i did all of my deliverys with the windows up, ac on (not on full power) and drove pretty slow. by the end of the day my average was still around 20. wow, then today i drove about 40 miles on the highway with windows down no ac, and ended up with an avg of 25 mpg(according to the driver gauge thing). i notice this car drinks gas...but it might be because its just a small tank so it looks like it, it only takes me like 27 bucks to fill up..lol
