insurance

talked to my insurance company today...originally it was going to be 3500 a year but they said they have changed the ratings on the cobalt SS/SC and it will be 2600$ for six months....thats ridiculous ...i cant buy one for that reason alone...at that rate insurance will be the same price as the car over 4 years...what have other people found with this issue...also i live in mass so that affects it a lot...my olds alero base coupe from 99 is 2100 to insure this year....i have no accidents and no moving violations by the way

You might want to check with Capital One -- they don't sell insurance but they can get you quotes and policies from different companies. I was with Nationwide before and they would have charged me $988/6 months for my Cobalt LS sedan -- still not bad compared with the approx. $1,200/6 months on my former 2005 Chevrolet Malibu LT -- but the Capital One representative got me a policy with Progressive, and my premium is now $584/6 months.

And I was pissed when Nationwide raised my insurance from $540/6 months to $1008/6 months due to a single speeding ticket (71 in a 55, but was misread and entered into my driving record as 91 in a 55 , still fighting it). This is on a '98 Grand Prix GTP, btw. Was hoping a Cobalt SS wouldn't be too much more.

$2600 for 6 months? Is Massachusettes that bad? I'd ride a bicycle to work before I would pay that much!

thanks that was a good thread...i know you cant get geico in mass but ill look into progressive...i dont think all of mass is as bad as where i live because im just out of boston, but it is pretty bad...we have very high restrictions on the liabilities u need to carry...also for some reason the SS/SC is rated way higher then i think it should be...its not a supercar...its a top of the line econobox

I'm 22, 1 accident and 3 speeding tickets. I got a quote from progressive. Basic cover= 48.00 per/month And best cover= 1500.00 annually. It's the best quote i've gotten so far!!

if i go from my 1500 to a cobalt ss my ins would drop about 24 bucks a month, with the srt-4 about 15 bucks a month......but i think since its so new that the ins people either dont realize what the car is, or dont think a s/c is quite as bad a turbo....

The cobalt got one of the best marks for saftey, thus lower insur. rates. It doesn't really have anything to do with turbo versus supercharger. Although, I have seen some people pay more for turbos, but it's not typical across the board for turbos. One thing to always look at when dealing with insur. is the "type of person" that would drive the car. My friend has a Vette and his insur. was lower than my Cav. We have just about the same tickets, income, credit rating, and everything. Its all about the Cav has more younger "tuner" drivers (more risk) and the Vette has more older "with family" drivers (less risk), so the companies charge more for the Cav because of the higher risk.

Thumbs up my quote

I'm with progressive, and if I quote a Cobalt SS and I get huge drop in premium coming from a Mazda 6. I won't display numbers or I'll slip into depression again, but i'm 24 with 8-10 points on my driving record just to give you a picture of what my payments are like :P On a side note... I get a slight decrease in premium from the 6 if I quote an STI. So i'm guessing that progressive rates by engine size/car size before actual performance?

Married , 2 kids and 30 years old. We have VERY good insurance through State Farm and my 02 GTP runs me $60 a month (one ticket, one accident) Hoping it will come down even more on a Cobalt SS. 2600 a month is absoluetly stupid , I would SERIOUSLY get a moped!!

Kinda surprised me, adding the Cobalt SS/SC to my current policy with the Grand Prix GTP actually lowered the overall premium $80 for 6 months. Pretty nice multi-car discount, huh?
