ion redline owners

what transmission do you have on your car, what code is it? and whats the gearing on it. example

FDR (final Drive Ratio)
1st
2nd
3rd
4th
5th

basically i'm trying to figure out if gm did infact change the trans between the redline and cobalt ss s/c, i've read that originally the fdr was 4.05:1 ratio, but now i went on gm and its stating 3.94:1 ratio with 1st gear being 4.05. lemme know RL owners. this could be an interesting find.

all RL's are manual.

1st - 4.05
2nd - 2.02
3rd - 1.35
4th - .98
5th - .69
final drive - 3.94

as opposed to the ion RL's

1st - 3.38
2nd - 1.76
3rd - 1.18
4th - .89
5th - .7
final drive - 4.05

LOL, GM's website division seems to have been a little confused or a little disconected with reality lately. I also wonder what the final curb weight is gonna be.

yeah, they've been all over the place lately, especially between the US and Canadian sites.

Lets just hope though, that that transmission isn't going to see the light of day in a SS(or those ratios, anyway).

Yeah I have noticed that too, I thought the Cobaltt SS supercharged was going to have the tranny with 4.05, 2.02, 1.35, 0.98, 0.69, FDR = 3.94 (that's what is on the chevy site). But on the technical specs on gmpowertrain.com give the Cobalt SS supercharged the tranny that is in the redline w/ the big gap (3.38, 1.76, 1.18, 0.89, 0.70, FDR = 4.05). GM needs to get there stuff straight.

I just hope GM doesn't half-*** the cobalt (and the redline) by using the latter tranny with the big gap. (I'm hoping the info on gmpowertrain.com is outdated)

I don't know if the big gear gap in the RL box is as bad as SCC makes it out to be. If you've ever browsed j-body.org for Cobalt info, you'll know that Mr.Goodwrench GT is a bit of a Cobalt hater. But he drove a RL and I believe he said the gap wasn't bad, and it could reach 60MPH in second because of it.

It's not bad for general driving purposes, but you you are at the track or racing, the shift from 1st to 2nd, the revs drop to about 3500 RPM according to SCC. And the 2.0 SC doesn't really start making power till above > 4000 RPM. So overall quater mile times (although like you said 0-60 mph times would probably not be affected) would be higher because the gearing is not within the RPM Powerband of the 2.0 SC.

that transmission is going to behave exactly like mine on the 'flower... good everyday, **** while racing.

My1-2 gap is good, but the 2-3 kills me. HUGH bog, engine drops from 6300 to 4000, and really kills the power. a closer gap would probably knock two or three tenths off my 1/4 time, it's that bad.

and that's without powerband issues; the LD9 makes max torque from 2400 to 4000rpm; it has an extremely flat torque curve.

i believe the gearing will be just fine once power is opened up down low, i have a feeling that these cars are extremely de-tuned, if anything, i think 1st gear is geared too high for the redline (extremely difficult to avoid wheel spin/hop above 1000-1500 rpms)
