Jack Stands

I was wondering what people used to jack their car up to get under it. Not going to be under there all the time, just sometimes when doing mods and oil.

I use the jack in the trunk, with jackstands of coarse. My one and a half ton jack is too tall to fit under the car, unless you drive the car up on blocks first.

The jack in the trunk is a pain though. I tried rotating my tires with that once and I'll never do that again.

I did the same and it does suck! I four jackstands though, so that helped a little.

I bought a hydraulic jack from Autozone for $30. It works like a dream, and so much easier to use than the crappy one that comes in the trunk.

The jacking points on the sides work fine. My car is lowered and I can get my heavy floor jacks under it with a piece of 2x4 on them.

Oh yeah, the stupid OEM jack assist that can also be used to loosen the lug nuts is a complete waste. The thing was bending when I was trying to use it. The set from walmart also came with a breaker bar, which helped big time.

I did the same once but I started to get some creaking noises from the car, so I stopped. I didn't use a 2x4 though.

I got a perfect sized hydraulic jack from Craftsman that even came with a case for 20 bucks. SOOO much better then the emergency jack.

Yo Halfcent, I take it since it's Craftsman you got it at Sears? And since it has a case, do you keep it in the car?

For oil changes I just use ramps. They get your car much higher off the ground than a jack, and much quicker.

I think i might have bent the frame for the jacks. Are you supposed to use the grooves or are you supposed to avoid them? The other parts seem to be stronger/thicker.

I use 4 jack stands under the frame of the body. Here is a couple picks of my car in the air.

When I need to get under the car, to do an oil change, etc. I just use ramps. Much faster, but not easier. My ramps are to steep, the seem to want to scratch the bottom of the front fascia. I have to use some 2x4's and make a mini ramp before the actual ramp. I'm in the process of buying new ones, but these work just as good. I rarely use jack stands, even though I have a set of four in my garage. I have a cheapo jack that my dad has had since forever, I could my a Craftsman one for cheap, but I don't feel like spending my money.

Really? How good is the hydraulic jack? And what do those usually cost? I've already got some jack stands, but I use the POS trunk jack to get the car in the air.

thanks for all the input. Going to be taking the wheels off and stuff so I thought this would be better then doing one at a time and safer, plus its fairly cheap.

I guess I am just lucky. My boss has a drive on lift in his garage at home with swing jacks if I need to take the tires off. Makes life easy.
