Kill Switch

My cousin and his wife live in a really bad part of NJ, We usually go out and hang out there alot and I drive there in my cobalt ss/sc... I never felt really comfortable about it... now its even worse.

My friend had his 05 WRX stolen from outside there appt at 4 or 5 am... He has 0% chance on recovery too the cops said...

Sooo what I want to do is install a kill switch in my car...

I was thinking about placing a key switch (one of those funky round keys) and mounting it in the coin holder where the trunk release is. But mounting it on the top of the compartment so you wouldn't see it. I would want this switch to cut the power supply to the fuel pump or other major component...

What do you think?

I was actually thinking about asking my service manager about this since he's really cool.

Thanks,
Rich

Sounds like a good idea, could be done cheaply and easily. Just have to find the right wire in the harness to switch. I would go for the starter solenoid, it is easy to get to.
Myself, I got the Lojack early warning system installed when I bought the car. It calls me on the phone and emails me if the car is moved without me being in it.

Very true...

I was just hoping it to be a "thetf deterant"...

Smashes window...
Jumps in the car... (alarm goes off)
Cracks ignition cyl...
Car wont start...
Goes WTF... Looks around...
Jumps out
Runs away...

Wishfull thinking... I think it might help...

I think its a smart idea. Once again, if they really want it, it's theirs, but you might as well give them hell until they do. It'll probably be enough to ward off a few people.

I used to work at a marina... and that got me thinking about putting a battery switch in my car... turn it off, no more juice... all the boats we sold and worked on had one... so I know they work, and I know they are cheap and easy to wire...

it'd be really easy to do, considering that our battery is already in the trunk... just tap right into the positive wire... I doubt many car thieves would think to look for a switch in the trunk to turn the car on... and even if they did I've seen battery switches with keyed locks built in...

now the only down side is that it'll clear your ECU and radio settings every time... but you can supposedly fix that by plugging a 9v battery into the cigarette lighter...

there's a cheaper alternative to low-jack or some high tech engine disabler... it wouldn't keep them from pulling it onto the back of a tow truck and running off... but atleast they couldn't drive it.

Yeah thats why I was thinking about putting the kill switch on the fuel pump circuit... this way, I won't lose any ecu or radio settings...

I go to my cousins to offen to have to reset the clock...

You can also easily modify the clutch swith as a cut off, thats what i did to mine. So even if the clutch is depressed you cant start the car, when the kill switch is on.

If someone broke into my car I would rather them steal it than leave me with a busted up vehicle. Have you ever seen what happens to a car when someone tries to steal it and it doesn't go well ? The thieves usually then cause as much damage as a side swipe accident. Let it get stolen. Then get another brand spanking new car because you have INSURANCE !!!!!!

If you want a really cheap theft deterrent disconnect the negative battery cable. First off they aren't going to know the battery is in the back and under the carpet so they would never figure it out. Second off can't steal a car with no power. Best of all it is free. Resetting your clock is no big deal and our stations stay saved in the radio so good to go.

I gotta dissagree... I would rather have a broken windows and a cracked ignition cylinder then no car...

At any given time there is a bunch of personal stuff in my car... maybe not valuable stuff... but my Full Name Address Phone number etc etc...

Thats a bunch of personal info I don't want anyone to have...

What do you think?

Thanks,
Rich[/QUOTE]

you got onstar....as long as they dont cut the wire to the onstar, your good to go!!! check with your service person to ask about beefing up the onstar wires so they cant be easily cut or disabled, that is as good as lojack or better! plus its already there!!!! of course i meant this as a recovery option only, cause i agree, if they want it they are gonna get it, even if they had to tow it!!!

if you disconnect the power, the radio stations get erased too
the ecu also has to 're-learn' the fuel curves, so itll run a little weird

You don't know if the WRX was driven or towed? Even with a kill switch, the car can be had by other means.

Lojack sounds like a nice touch.

You guys make me paranoid.

My friend had a civic SI which was ALMOST stolen from the Rt. 18 Flea Market in East Brunswick (not exactly considered the "ghetto" on NJ) the only reason they didn't get his car was because he always used to take a plug wire off and with him when he went ANYWHERE...only problem with that is once they couldn't get the car started they took his insurance car (now they had his address) my friend didn't realize it was gone and a few days later the car was stolen right from his driveway and found about 2 days later in Irvington COMPLETELY stripped......i'm sure there is a fuse or something you can pull off the car to not allow it to start before you get the cut off installed
