It Makes No Sense... Rpm Gauge

while driving at any speed, in any gear i push the clutch the rpms go crazy. In any car i have ever driven except this one (cobalt SS/SC), the rpms drop to the idle rpm 700rpm 800rpm you now whatever your idle is. My cobalt when i push the clutch it stays above 1100 rpm and bounces, until i come to a complete stop then it goes to normal idle speed. Has anyone noticed this on their Cobalts.. It doesn't make any sense to me. Maybe my rpm gauge is on crack ...

The reason the RPM's don't drop to idle when you put the clutch in is probably so that when you put it back in gear and let the clutch out, the engine won't have to play catch-up with the rest of the drivetrain. So basically it helps avoid that forward jerk when you engage the engine into gear without matching revs.

As for the bouncing, I honestly don't know. Its probably a glitch in the PCM, take it to the dealer and see what they have to say about it.

the clutch should have nothing to do with it because if the clutch did not fully disengage then i would not be able to smoothly pull out of gear. The only thing i can think of is that the fly wheel weighs a ton, but its weird that when i come to a stop it goes to its normal idle speed..

How long does it take you to shift?

All high powered cars do that. Burns off the extra fuel that has been fed. Mine does it every time. Runs rich at idle tho when its really cold out.

never had that happen, like every manual car i have driven, put the clutch in and RPM's drop to idle. What you could be doing and what i was doing for a while was still being on the gas while putting the clutch in so everytime i would shift RPMs would shoot up to 3k.

no, he said it drops to around 1100. Mine does the same thing. It stays up there when I'm slowing down, out of gear, until I stop. Then it drops to 7/800

Most neweer cars do that even some automatics, my 2001 and 1993 Cavalier Z24's do it.

They most likely are set that way to avoid problems when you put it back into gear.
