what year are you looking for? If 06 or older Id also look at the RSX type-s (thats the last year for the RSX). That car is simply bulletproof. Really nice car, well made and reliable. Not quite as fast as the Balt, but that can be changed. Regular problems to the balt are: wheel hop, snapping axels, breaking steering knuckles, paint chipping real easy and scratching, and transmission problems. You mention reliability in your post, my advice, stay away from the Balt. others will dissagree.

Wheel hop is an issue but that can be corrected by LEARNING TO DRIVE!
Learning to drive also corrects the axle and steering knuckle issues as they are a direct result of the wheel hop which is directly related to not knowing how to drive.
They're a nice little car with good and bad points but you CAN'T judge a car on how a driver ABUSES it.

I have had no problem with my SS/SC I have almost 10k miles on it in over a year of driving. I also track the car so it gets well used.
You will not snap an axle stock and especially if you don't drive like a moron. Mounts will totally eliminate the possibility of this happening but unless you wheel hop a ton it won't happen anyway.
wheel hop is a problem with every FWD car. Again mounts will fix it.
I have yet to hear of a person breaking steering knuckles. GM has an upgrade kit for them though if you are worried about it because they do say under constant abuse in autox situations they may break.
I have no idea what transmission problems this guy is talking about. There are none.
The paint isn't the best in the world.
Bottom line don't listen to the troll I quoted. Treat your cobalt good and it will treat you good. It's a great bargin.
Wow this man does not speak for cobalt owners and sounds a lot like a troll.

ur an idiot.. listen to urself.. Your advising this guy to go out and buy a car that will be great with just a few mods.. Great advice.. "Hey, heres your brand new car, but dont drive it hard, or have any fun in it, or it will break." Oh, but you can spend tons of money and mod it to handle driving harder.. give me a break!
Everything I have listed in my post is from cobalt drivers on THIS SITE! not made up.. Its from research i did when I wanted to buy this car, BUT DIDNT, cause it is SIMPLY not as good as other cars on the market.. Such as the RSX Type S.. Thats all i said..
Your car doesnt have these problems? Great, good on you.. BUt a lot of other people I spoke to have problems with there cobalts and are clearly voicing them on this site.. Make a thread if your so confident and ask about the problems I listed.. but calling me names doesnt make your car better.. so enough with the baby games..
But the one thing you did admit to is the shitty paint..
and IN MY OPINION, these cars arent going to mars, their paint should be able to stay on and not chip, flake, scratch.. Just another example tho of another flaw in the car.. VERIFIED by the ONE AND ONLY Ima dreamer.. so its gotta be true!
To clear up confusion, do not let one persons opinion, even if a bunch of people have trouble with theirs sway you. But take it into consideration. Like I said earlier, ALL makes and models of cars have lemons. That's a fact. My friends ss/sc, 0 problems at all... Now is there a ss/sc out there with a few problems to counteract it, yes. It's what YOU like. And if you are unlucky and get one that has to go to the dealer a few times, it's not the end of the world and nobody is forcing you to keep it.

it has to be cuz your from canada.. you must get the shitty bunch up there... most of the problems you listed are when people are heavily modding/ beating the **** out of their car.. and it can happen with any car.. the one thing you SHOULD'VE mentioned was the #4 piston issue.... thats a real problem that no one can figure out...
and news flash all paints scratch... and don't mention paint chipping till you look at the older neons... thats paint peeling on a car no matter how beating it was
tranny mounts cost like 40 bucks dude. thats not a ton of money. most stock cobalts have no problems. its the idiots running stage 2 tune with mods other than stage 2 or guys running super small pullies without the correct supporting mods. the clutch has been an occasional problem with the ss/sc however clutch problems are plentiful reguardless of make and model (ask the evo/sti guys). Just do your research before you modify and you shouldnt have any problems. Also i wouldnt take advice from someone who doesnt actually own a cobalt on a cobalt forum....
P.S. And my advice comes from all you who do have a cobalt. and it is that advice that stopped me from buying it. and i thank you for it! no joke.. seriously

A lot of third gear popping out and loud engine..
Also, you see how a person will have a con about the car, and another has a pro about the same thing? No car is the same. And it's what you are used to. If somebody drove a hybrid and got close to 40mpg and then went to a non hybrid, of course they aren't gonna get the greatest gas mileage and will complain about it. If you see a common con, then yah, I'd believe it. These guys who have balt problems do mod their car and def put them through their paces. Of course they're gonna break.. Depends how hard you drive them modded. I've read TONS of threads about people saying how their civic si's break all the time. You know what, they are boosted so yah at some point, they will break. My Si, not boosted. Never a problem..

For reliability I'd check with Consumer Reports. They're supposed to be fair but.....
Handling.....well they were made to handle, especially the ones with LSD. Turning radius is a bit wide but I can live with it.
Are they as fast as people say,
Fast is a relative term. It may be faster than the average bear, maybe,....... but it's not gonna be a 10 sec queen. For the 15 sec 1/4 mile group, yep it'll hang.
Gotta know what your looking for. Of course you asked about a Cobalt SS on a Cobalt site so the answers are a little biased. Cause I love my little car.

i would get the ss/sc...def..if i didnt have my loan with my car now...u cant beat the performance for the price...u can get a good used one low miles for 15-17 k....why not?
Don't take advice from someone who doesnt have one? Would you not take mortgage advice from someone who doesnt have a mortgage, or big screen TV advice, or Insurance advice?? The guy asked for reliability issues and I named them.. Yes, I dont have a cobalt, but those are still the issues. And you confirmed it.. Youre as bad as the other guy! And im still getting dissed.. Buy an RSX type-s is my advice.. and lets see who makes it to 200,000 km with less problems.. hands down, u know which ones winning..

1. Find out information on aftermarket mods
2. Find out solutions to problems they may be having. So of course you're going to see a ton of 'i have this problem' threads.
take into account this forum has THOUSANDS of members.
*eidt* almost 20,000 members to be precise
My 1979 Chevy Malibu made it to over 700,000 MILES with the original engine, trans, and rear end. Whats your point? You take care of the car and it WILL take care of you.
BTW you do know Ford just past imports in its ranking as far as durability. So by your logic he should buy a Focus.

The Cobalt is a great Buy for the Money
, I have had mine 2 years Now & no Problems. But like stated earlier if you do your Homework & you Mod it right you wont have near the Problems that you see on here!
Smaller Pulleys>> require more Cooling
Lots more torque >>reguires Motor & Tranny Mounts
Just like anything you Mod there is a supporting Mod >> Just do it Right!

I simply advised that the original poster should take a look at the rsx type-s. Because it is an all-round great car for the money.. and even if your sarcastically trying to poke a jab at me, by hailing Ford, its irrelevent. BECAUSE:
1) the Focus is not a comparable car to the Cobalt Supercharged or RSX Type-S in terms of performance, price, etc.
2) I am trying to help the guy. You trying to be smart (but failing miserably) at comparing apples to orranges is not helping the guy to make a purchase! Ford and the focus has nothing to do with anything.. RSX does because it is COMPARABLE to the Balt!
3) Please, to all readers.. go back and read the posts thoroughly before writing me.. read them twice if you have to.. but dont be like jackalope and make me have to respond to absolute nonsense..

.....everyone has the own thought i love my balt.....test drive one see if you like it..you wont really know til you get behind the wheel of one
