So, there I was looking for an additional car to add to the family when I come across an older gent selling a 2006 Silver Cobalt ss/sc. I give him a call and we agree to meet up. The car is mint, only 7200 miles. It has the small spoiler on it because he didnt like the blindspot the parkbench has. It also has an aftermarket stage 2 (installed by gm so my warrenty is still good). He wanted 16.5k for it. I did some quick research (msrp, reviews, carfax, etc...). Everything looked good and the price was right so I bought it. So...now I find myself, at the ripe young age of 33 wondering what I have gotten myself into? I guess it will be a fun ride finding out.

One of the biggest things you should know is...Wheelhop sucks....get traction bars....

Ok... my last 2 vehicles have been toyotas that I have done nothing too but change the oil and add fuel too. Needless to say im not overly educated in the auto world, so lets get started Where do i get those and what will the cost be? Wheel hop eh? Im guessing you are refering to my inability to keep my tires on the ground until 3rd gear...

The cheaper way to get rid of the wheel hop is to buy Turbo Tech Racing custom made and painted Motor Mounts and tranny bushings i have them makes the car feel stiffer

 

If your not going to launch your car, you don't need to get any kind of mounts or braces. I guess it all depends what you want to do with it. Wheel hop doesn't occur if you aren't crazy with it in first gear. Make sure to get your oil changed, it's important on all cars, but these especially.

 

I agree with sealy.
If you don't intend on racing the car, don't bother spending money on any kind of traction aid, it wouldn't be worth your money.

If you plan to race the car, be it street or at the track (hopefully the later, lol) then look into some of the traction aid options. Everyone has different opinions on these, and again they all go back to what you want to do with the car.

For me personally. I would go with one of Turbo Tech Racing's solid engine mounts, and a full set of poly bushings. However, the downside to the solid mount is that it's solid, lol. These will give you a fair amount of vibrations in the car, because the engine has no play within the engine bay. It's movement shakes the car. Now again, this also goes on a person-to-person basis, as some people don't notice the vibs, and others can't stand it.

The first thing you need to do to make this easier for yourself, is figure out what your goal with this car is. Do you want to race it? Do you want it to be a fun daily-driver you can boot around in? Do you want it to be a grocery-getter with some serious *****?

Once you've figured that out. Do some research

 

Well first off Im not planning to do anything serious with it until post warrenty. I will look into mods that will not void my warrenty. (any suggestions would be great)Honestly I do not plan on racing right now....but I find myself surrounded by cars revving next to me at red lights and going down the highway ( just got the car and it happens constantly). So there may be the occasional dig/roll from there. Im guessing most people that own ss/sc's launch on occasion. Theres just too much temptation

Well the GMPP stage 2 wont void your warrenty only thing that will cost your warrenty is like NOS anything that will hurt the car pretty much but you should always ask your dealer cause dealers vary

 

He mentioned that his has an aftermarket stage 2. There is a possibility that it could have some warranty issues if something does mess up. Even if a GM dealership installed it, it's not covered under warranty unless it's GM parts. No other dealer has access to his PCM programming if it's aftermarket other than the installing dealer(or whoever done the tune).

 

If it is the GM stage 2 he is set for warrenty. I't might be a good idea to get the guys paperwork from install so if something happens, you can prove it.

If you are like me, stage 2 and an intake is plenty upgraded enough for now (maybe exhaust down the road but that's about it). If you don't have an intake on the car and don't mind spending 250 bucks, I would suggest getting it if you like the whine of the supercharger.

Your car as it sits now is plenty fast for pulling many of the cars on the road, and probably most of the ones that rev at you at red lights. Last night I was next to an IS 300 and we both pull off the light normally. After first gear he decides to punch it, so I punch it, I easly pull 3 cars by 65. Either way, I'm sure you will be happy with your purchase. Sounds like you got a deal if the grandpa you bought it from was nice to it.

Technically GM stage 2 is still aftermaket...in my opinion. Anyways to the OP, make sure you find out what stage kit you have in your car.

The stage 2 is not GM but it was installed and the cpu programed by GM. I am headed to the Chevy dealership to go over warrenty info and possible GM mods in the morning. Hell, I have orig pully and the GM stage 2 pully and belt in my closet (the 241hp one). Not that I would swap em out, but it is an option.
