No more Cobalts?
No more Cobalts?
ok i heard last night that saturn is doing away with the ion and ion redline due to the release of the sky and sky redline next year. i seriously doubt this but she told me that they may be doing away with cobalts which makes no sense to me because they are very popular and only came out last year and also the "G5" is suppose to come out next year. I also heard that chevrolet is supposed to be working with honda next year on producing the cobalt. has anyone else heard anything about either of these?
Yes, the Ion is going away, but not because of the Sky. The Ion had more issues with it from the beginning, that they supposedly fixed on the Cobalt, and it's just not the hot seller the Cobalt is. Cobalt's not going anywhere any time soon.
Ironic, though...Saturn, the "import fighter" division, is going to have an import itself.

This is true. The Cobalt will run with its current platform for a while after the Ion switches to the Astra platform, then they will both get another new platform a after that and they will then be on the same platform again. Wierd, but true.

they have the new 2008 cobalt cmming out and cobalt will never work with honda honda has the acura v 10 comming out in 2008 to 2010 date is pending but the cobalt will be around as long as the cavi if not longer
I don't think the Cobalt will live as long as the Cavi, at least not with lots of changes. The Cavi towards the end of its live was a really dated car that could not compete with the current imports. GM has stated that they will not let any plateform live that long again. So the Cobalt name might live for a very long time, but not the current car as we know it. Expect a new platform for it around 2010 or so.

No matter; most New World buyers would find the European-market Opel Astra, also built on the Delta platform, to be odd-looking and cramped, with a bone-jarring ride and a sewing-machine motor under the hood. Some attributes are common to the platform, and the Cobalt inherets the sharp handling and precise steering that are necessary for the Delta platform to work in Europe.
Here's Car and Driver's article about the switch to Astra which also mentions Delta:
Car and Driver Article
Many improvements were made to Delta for the Cobalt - many of them based on negative feedback on the Ion implementation.

But I don't think they would work on a full development program together. I'd think it would be Toyota if anyone.

That seems to be the same with everything these days. Everybody seems to get in bed with each other at some time. I think the little partnerships are manly used to see what the other company is doing or it settle a patten disagreement/conflict.

Look At Mitsubishi And Dodge For Example Along With Chrysler... Aparently The New Sebring Is Going To Have The Mitsubishi Lancer Platform, The Raider Has The Dakota Platform Some Mazda 626's Have Mitsubishi Part Numbers... The Chrysler Sebring Is The Same As The Old School Eclipse 01-05 Model

), to Acura's RSX. If Chevy discontinues the Cobalt that would be bad. Pretty soon more and more companies will start to drop sports cars, and try to make a mini SUV (AKA Caliber), throw a powerful engine in it and attempt to call it a sports car. Except it will only be used by soccer moms on crack. Now what would happen to the industry if they dropped the EVO or STI or even the Civic SI?
