Does the oil filter itself need to be changed around every 3K miles even if you use a synthetic oil?

 

Hmmm...keep a dirty filter in there with the new oil and risk having it deteriorate on you or spend $5 on a filter and replace it...logic dictates what?

 

If anything you should change the filter every 3k and the oil when the DIC says to.

 

Agreed. An oil filter is a lot cheaper than a motor

 

Where do you guys find your filters for 5 bucks?? I pay $8.50 plus tax...........

Point being just pay the $8-$10 and save your self a major hassel

 

See this is all I was looking for. I have Mobil 1 Extended Performance oil which is good up to 15K per Mobil. Just wanted to double check on replacing the filter at 3K.

Logic also dictates that you don't go around acting like an ******* for no apparent reason.

 

I wouldn't run any oil for 15k even with an oil life monitor. The highest mileage I'd go before I changed my oil would be 8k. That's just my personal preference. I also live in a very dusty and dry area.

I don't plan on running it further than 10K.

 

I have 2 Cobalts. Almost at 80k on one, and 60k on the other. Never had an issue with changing the filter at the same time as the oil. I've only gone off the DIC. I've used AC Delco, Purolator, Wix, and Parts Master. No deteriorating filters so far.

 

You want oil analysis, go to blackstone laboratories. I would have done it last oil change, but I had run seafoam through it, so it would have contaminated the oil making it useless to analyze.

 

I have done Blackstone analysis for the past 60,000 miles. Some people on this forum would be shocked by the results. The Ecotec engine is VERY easy on oil and can go a lot longer than some people might think.

 

Changing the fliter every 3 k is a good idea. I try to change my oil when the DIC gets to about 15% and at least the fliters i get from the dealer are in pretty rough shape by then

Didn't think I would get flamed for asking a question like this. You'd think I put a gas door sticker on my car and asked if it looks good or something. The very reason why I'm asking is because I care a lot about my car and I want to make sure to do things right.

 

There's really no point to change the oil unless its outlived its usefulness. The only way to be sure of that is by doing used oil analysis(es) and seeing how useable the oil is at certain intervals.

Unless of course you like throwing money away and polluting...

Yeah, changing synthetic oil every 3k on a daily street driven Cobalt/G5 is basically like flushing money down the toilet.

Those of you who change mobil 1 at that interval, instead of recycling/wasting it, feel free to ship it to my address so that I can use it in my car when it comes time to change my own engine oil.

 

Whoever changes a synthetic oil at 3K deserves to waste their money.

 

You'd be surprised at how many members on this forum follow that 1960's-based oil change rule.

 

Agreed. If you're not considered a "severe" driver you can go way above 3K between changes with conventional oil on the 2.2 and 2.4s.

Ford Claims with the newer mustang you could go 10K between changes.
