Ordering and allocation process.
Ordering and allocation process.
I have had a few people asking how the ordering and allocation process works. Here is as short a descritption as I can get without leaving too much stuff out:
The process that a dealer goes through to order a car is like this:
1. A dealer receives a certain allocation for cars based on his sales of that model or similar models if it is a new one. In this case the Cobalt is based mostly off of the Cavalier. That allocation is given to him a month at a time (give or take a week) he then gets a report that tells him how many cars he will get for each week in that month long period. In this case he may have 10 Cobalts for the month broken down into 4 weeks of 2,3,3,2 per week. This break down only tells what a dealer gets in general, not whether they are SS's or LT's or whatever.
2. Each Thursday the dealer receives a report showing his allocation for the week, in this case the first week has 2, and then a breakdwon of what options and models he can make those 2 cars into. This is where a dealer finds out if he can order an SS or not. The dealer puts in 2 orders to match his allocation constraints or matches a sold order in the system to one of the allocations. The dealer has Thursday to Saturday evening to do this process which can take a little bit of time when you consider he has to do this process for each Model and Carline that he carries and every allocation. There are times when it is close to 100 cars & trucks.
3. Sunday and Monday the system processes all these orders from all dealers and then on Tuesday the Dealer gets them back to make any final changes, Colors or options or whatever as long as it passes the weeks constraints.
4. The process starts all over again on Thursday.
Once an order gets placed then it advances through the system depending on plant capacity and supplier issues according to the following sequence:
Order status codes:
1100 = Preliminary Order (Order passed GM edit tables but dealers has not received allocation to place order)
2000 = Accepted By GM (Dealer used allocation to place order into production)
2500 = Preferenced (Order pulled to the production system)
3000 = Accepted By Production Control (Order input into the production system)
3100 = Sequenced (Order sequenced for Production)
3300 = Scheduled For Production (Order is scheduled into the plant build cycle)***
3400 = Broadcast (Order is sent to various build & supplier areas to bring order together)
3800 = Produced (Order is built and VIN# shows in the Dealer Order system now)
4150 = Invoiced (Order is invoiced to the dealer)
4200 = Shipped (Vehicle is shipped to the dealer or point of delivery)
5000 = Delivered To Dealer
6000 = Delivered To Customer
There are other codes but they are almost exclusively used internally by GM and have no real effect on the status of the order as pertaining to the customer.
Sorry this got kind of long winded but it is hard to explain in much shorter terms.

The only way that unit will get built now is if the G85 is removed. Here is a copy of the constraints from last week (the order cycle that ended Tuesday):

Based on the definition for code 1100 it looks like they haven't been truthful with you and are hoping they can get an allocation.
Can you please explain this line:
2005 Cobalt 30-May-05 1AP37 SS Coupe 12%* GREATER Than 4 Weeks Start up restriction

I hope you get yours after all the calls you made. Otherwise, you're going to be just as disgruntled as I am with your dealer and GM! I need to find a new dealer with half a brain, who doesn't lie, and gives a crap about the customer for my 2006 order.. IF I still bother to wait for an '06...

My dealer showed me a printout of their list and my car has a TPW of June 6. Does this mean that my car will be included in the 12% or can **** still happen?

Honestly I hope you suck at what you do and your dead wrong becuase if not I'm going to be REALLY PISSED I talked to 3 people at chevy and my dealer and never did any of them even say their was a possibility that it wont be made
Unfortunately I do not, and I do know what I am talking about. Some dealers just do not tell you the truth. If you want give me a fax number and I will fax over a copy of the order and it's status as of today.

As I have said in another post, I have found Marvin to be informative and accurate over on the Corvette forums and I figure this trait crosses over to the Cobalt forums. My dealer says they are still hopeful because the order had made it so far along the status grid. Has anyone thought of the possibility that the Quaife LSD (which is made in England) is sitting on a dock waiting for customs? Quaife makes more than LSD's, they have some six speed transmissions for $16,000 plus. Their warranty can't be beat: if any of the product breaks for any reason (racing included) they will replace it. laborsmith
They are stringing you along to keep the sale. If they tell you they can't get it you would be getting something else right ? If they keep telling you to wait then they make the sale, the more time you have invested into the deal the less likely you are to walk away.

That is possible. Except, no I would not get something else and last Friday when all this popped up this dealer has FOUR SS/SC's ( 1 each, black, red, yellow and blue) which they did not do a SALES job to try to get me to take one. This dealer sold Sneaky his SS/SC and as far as I can tell from GMBuypower has had and sold more SS/SC's in Michigan than all the rest of the Michigan Chevrolet dealers combined. Anyways, I was a little slow on the uptake, and you could be right - just stringing me along to keep the sale. But what would be nice would be for Chevy to step up and tell us what is going on with the G85 package so we can wait with some understanding instead of enduring all this speculation. -- laborsmith

Maybe they are using you to get more allocation for next year instead of offering you what is on the lot or negotiating with another dealer who has exactly what you ordered sitting on their lot. I would, at this point, consider what they have on the lot and then do a search of surrounding dealers to see if there is one on a lot that matches what you ordered. I think you can still back out and get the deposit back and go to another dealer who has what you ordered. Then you don't have to wait and just drive away!!!!!!!!!!!
If you don't push, they will keep you guessing until it's too late and time is ticking.
The person who sold me my cavy was hoping I'd buy one of the allocated cars the dealer had ordered. But, none of them was exactly what I wanted so I went to a friend who works at a dealer at the other end of the city. They have been allocated only 3 SS's this year and one is mine. The order was preferenced weeks ago so I know it will be made and I get all the info because it's a friend(I know he's not lying). Back at the original dealer the allocated SS's were sold almost immediately upon arrival. I feel bad about not buying from my original dealer but business is business and my original salesman should have included my order with theirs months ago. I drank beers with this salesman and talked about it before they even ordered the cars!!! Why didn't he offer it then????
