performance exhuast without the annoying noise
is there a such thing as getting a performance exhaust that won't make my car considerably louder? i want better airflow without exciting my parents or the cops.
I have heard the GMPP Touring Exhaust will give you the performance without the loud exhaust. Thats probalby what i will be going with. I'd much rather hear supercharger whine then loud exhaust haha
I'm talking to one of the guys at MadDad, which makes Subaru exhausts.
They have this "whisper" exhaust for Subarus which is apparently THE quietest exhaust available. I'm inquiring about selling just the 2.5" or 3" muffler to me to test out.
Here's the muffler I'm referring to.

If anyones interested:

Getting the exhaust to sound right is a bit of both science and art. The packing material is unique. It's a patened engineered firber we import from Germany strictly for the Whisper series exhausts. It's expensive but we haven't found any other material that does the job as well nor lasts as long without blowing out. Second is the unique little angle we put in the baffle. It's a trick that is just learned from experience, but the third piece isn't as generic. The third part is making the exhaust canister the exact right size for the application it's used on. For instance we don't reuse the same canister for a Subaru Forester as we do for a regular Subaru Impreza. All other companies that make subaru Impreza exhausts just reuse the same canister if they offer a Forester exhaust…thing is the Forester SUV body style will tend to drone a bit if the canister is too small…which in WRX canister is in our opinion, so make a one-off Forester spec canister that is larger so we can run a longer baffle run to damnen the sound further. So while a Whisper canister from one of our WRX exhausts will no doubt have some nice features to damnen sound, I have no clue if it would be the appropriate solution for your car. We make a Whisper for the BMW 135i and we had to revise the exhaust 3 times before we released it because we weren't happy with the sound. One size just doesn't fit all applications. Unfortunately, about 90% of all exhausts are generic canisters reused for umpteen different cars.

not sure what type of balt you have, but if you have a SS/tc go with the Hahn as it is extremely quiet, barely at all louder then stock, or if you are an SS/tc with a lowering kit, or are planning to lower, I heard the MPx exhaust is pretty quiet, and works very well with a lowered car.
this is mine. its hardly noticeable on the freeway and you'll only here it when you mash the throttle.

if i was anybody i wouldnt go with the GMPP. why spend the money on that when you can get any other system for the same amount, have it sound better, and get better performance. it just doesnt make sense.

Sounds like he might have a DP on there, because with the catback alone mine was barely louder, and with the cat at idle it still sounds almost stock, just a little deeper, and at WOT it is louder, but as far as aftermarket exhaust/DP combos go, its pretty quiet.
i just wish that hahn made a 2.5 inch catback so i could put it on my car. i love the sound of the hahn catbacks.
i havent found any that sound better than the gmpp performance i had on my ss/sc
it is as follows: 2.5 inch stainless steel catback, 18 inch magnaflow resonator, 5x8 Magnaflow muffler, and 2.5 inch rolled-slant cut tip. it is all CUSTOM built. here's the best part, i only paid $440 brand new and shipped!!! you buy the regular magnaflow kit your looking at $600 MINIMUM and they only come in the 2.25 inches for the L61 motors. i'll provide you a link to where i bought it, directly to the page for the Cobalts. these guys are awesome and will answer all your questions. if you want a flowmaster, borla, dynomax (put that on your car, i'll kill you).......you name it they'll get it and build it. if you want to add in the resonator...all you have to do is pick which one and add it to your cart and they'll weld it on. hope this helps

it is hardly noticable on the freeway and is not overly loud when you mash the peddle. im very pleased with the system.
and i am very happy for you. but i, personally, do not like the GMPP exhausts. i dont think your getting what you pay for.

I am also looking at cat-back exhausts. Was looking at Magna Flow and GMPP. Is the mandrelbent.com setup legit? I mean for half the price of the Magna Flow website, is it too good to be true?
Also, for the madrelbent.com: whats the difference between the 5x8 in standard and the 6 in increased air flow? And a resonator... Do I need one or not?

I'm glad I found this topic. But I think I might save 200 by getting CTI's over axle pipe, and mandrelexhaustsystems.com's magnaflow resonator. Then pick up a magnaflow muffler 5X8 for 80 bucks off the magnaflow site. Since the exhaust on a 2.4 like my self is already 2.5 other than the over axle which I'm replacing, it seems that that would be a good way to go. What does everyone think of that? Or am I REALLY better off getting the whole catback? I mean will it REALLY make that much of a difference? Technically it would only be like ONE bend in the exhaust that isn't mandrel bent other than the downpipe...
http://www.magnaflowplus.com/ShowIte...20Muffler.aspx is this the size muffler i need? or do i need 18in. Body; 24in. Overall; 2.5in. ? i've never messed with a muffler on a car before so i don't really know don't make fun....
