Play in Shifter

Just a quick question. Is it normal to have about a 1/4" of left to right play in a manual when in gear? Thank you for the help in curing m OCD if this is not a problem!

I've noticed mine has some play once it's in gear. I thought it was because of the shift cables, and not having a direct link into the trans. Like a rwd would have

I've got more than that in terms of play, and I have the LNF bracket and shifter base bushings in my IRL that has ~85k miles.

I've done the following mods and here's how I'd rate them:

LNF bracket: definitely the first mod, made a very noticeable difference in shift gate definition, plus lubing the shift cables @ the tranny helped

Shifter base bushings: A good mod, helps with shifter gate definition too, but not as much as the bracket did. A small increase in the amount of vibration going through the shifter, but that's not a problem considering how little your hand is actually on the shifter

Braided clutch line: Only made a small difference in clutch feel, but it did improve it noticeably. Considering the hassle of bleeding the clutch line and the effort to remove everything, I'd only recommend doing this if you have a lot of spare time or when you're changing your clutch.

Good post! I am thinking I will start with the bushings and go from there. Pretty cheap and easy install.

I just put my stock shifter back in my LSJ. Has BPS base bushings and LNF bracket. It is pretty solib, but has way more play in it than my BPS did.

My LNF has BPS base bushings, BPS STS and feels way tighter than my LSJ ever did. I feel like the LNF have different cables...
