Probably a simple question... what's the switch behind the clutch?

I'm wondering what the switch behind my clutch is used for?

clutch position switch

it tells the car if the clutch is engaged or open, it has to be open to start the car

^^^ What he said. Also, must indicate clutch engaged for the cruise to work.
