Protect my front

Ok so I have only had my car for about 5 weeks or so and have realized driving as far as i do to work its gonna take a beating from rocks and other things. I don't really like the way that they look on other cars but is there a bra out for the 06 cobalt SS/SC? Don't think its that attractive but if it protects the front of my car on the beltway during the week I could pull it off and cruise on the weekends. Just wondering what was out there. Thanks

3 choices, a "car bra". a hood protector, or the 3M treatment ...

I have a bra on my car. And it is save to have on the car. You just have to apply paste wax to the before putting on the bra. It will protect the paint while the bra is on. This isn't the first I have had a bra on a car. Just wax the car every five washes.

I read that to remove the clear bra you have to heat the material to a 150 degrees f . And the other thing is for those that are into detailing there own car alot like me it would be a pain to have to keep on removing the clear bra when it com'e to waxing and polishing the car.

You wax and polish over it, just like you would your paint. It looks great, my best friend has it on her MCS and loves it. She's also a wash/wax/polish/detail freak and waxes the car every week. There's no differences between color or anything and you really have to look in order to see it on the car. I will most likely be putting it on the Cobalt as soon as possible.

Is the clear bra just clear vinyl ? If so, does the paint fade under the vinyl as the car ages.

Yeah, its basically clear vinyl. I had it on my old BMW. You just wash/wax/polish right over the top of it. the only thing is, that wax and polish will build up on the edge of the film, so you have to wipe the edges off. As for paint fade, I think the film protects the paint from fadding. But, Im not sure. Once you have it on there, you are more then likely never going to take it back off. Cause you will never see a difference between the paint under it and the rest of the car....unless you live somewhere where paint fades really fast and you car looks like its been sitting in the desert for 20 years.

Don't know what the 3m stuff is, definitely does not feel like vinyl. The paint does not fade and I believe there's a warranty on it, but I'm not sure. The installers would know.

Here is a link to the FAQs about Scotchgard. (3M)
I wish I had it on my car, those dumptrucks on the highway are killers.

The paint is being protected by the clear bra, they do a wax before installing. The paint will fades as fast as the other paint on the vehicle. Its the best product to buy because it won't come loose like a leather bra can, therefore it won't scuff or scratch the paint. There are virtually no disavantages to the clear bra, its the best!!

I'll stay with the bra that is on my car. I can't see heating the top of the car to 150 degrees f to take the clear bra off everytime you have to wax or polish the car. I just know alot about detailing and that will be a pain to keep taking it off of the car.

Exactly, for some reason he clearly didn't understand my post.

I do understand! The thing is you don't understand when it come's to detailing a car. A car need's to be waxed atleast once a month. That mean's you have to take the clear bra off and have it put back on. And some people say when you get a clear bra that it should be applied by a pro. Well if your a detail freak like me then that become a pain and expensive.

No you don’t understand, with the clear bra you DON'T need to take it off, the paint is already been protected and it doesn't need to be taken off for waxing. It’s an air tight covering that keeps the paint away from the elements. If you don't understand then that’s your loss not mine. I love my car and keep it in very good shape. I had it on my cobalt for a year and the paint looked like new with 12,000 miles on it and I never took it off to wax it.

I understand that you have limited comprehension on the topic so I leave it at that; if you can't comprehend why it is this way then your better off without it.

I also see that you don't understand when it come's to detailing. But what would you know about that. You said you never took it off, ok then when you do take it off look at the paint that is under the clear bra and the paint that wasn't. You will see a difference. Do you know what the meaning of orange peal is.

Um, OK. I think that just proved Chevypowered's point right there...and really discredited your knowledge on the topic. Orange peel doesn't have anything to do with how you detail your car. It has to deal with how the clear coat is applied at the factory...

As for the clear bra, it IS its own protectant. Kind of like a permanent wax that you never have to "re do" as long as it is on the car. No paint fade, no nothing. I've seen it on many cars and seen it left on for many years. The paint is just fine under it, and when it is installed ASAP after the factory paint cures, it will keep the paint looking like it did from the factory.

Like someone said on another forum that you will not get chip's, but you will get a banged up, scratched up and orange peeled appearance. I know what I read about the clear bra. Also I'm done talking about this topic anyway. Everyone has there own opinion on this topic. I'm done with it.

I work at a Honda dealership and all of our showroom cars have 3M "clear bras". The way it works is like everyone has been saying. You keep it there and if it gets nicks or from the bugs getting fried on or scraps. Then you take it back to the dealer and there is a special machine that reapplies another clear bra. It's cover in the warranty. And if you take care of your car as much as you say you do then your other paint won't fade if you keep up with the cleaning and waxing. It's a very good way to keep your car looking clean. We also have some on the side mirrors, the door trim and the back bumpers. It's very nice and good protection.

Do you have to pay everytime you have to get the clear bra replied?

LMAO. This is good. I've seen this applied and changed on new cars. As soon as the paint is cured, the film is applied. When it is changed, the paint looks the way it did from the factory. No scratches, no damage whatsoever.

As I said before, I don't care how you care for your car, ORANGE PEEL IS A RESULT OF THE FACTORY CLEAR COAT PROCESS, NOT DETAILING OR ANYTHING ELSE. If you have a car with orange peel, it's ALWAYS going to have orange peel. A car without orange peel is only going to get it if it is repainted.

Orange peels don't just happen in the result of factory clear coat. You can get it from other way's. Just check out Meguiar's.
