i think you can get several layers of the stuff and peel off the dirty ones one at a time. i dont think it has anything to deal with detailing though

I have NEVER heard of orange peel from any other source. Once the paint is cured it's either there or it's not. The only conceivable explaination I could see would be waxing the paint before it's cured, but that is a very VERY long stretch. But once the clear coat is cured, then it's cured, you cannot get orange peel after that point.

I'm just saying what I read about it. Like I said in my profession you cant's just wax or polish around the clear bra when it is on the car.

Here is what someone said about the clear bra.

Yes it protects from chips but, what do you do when the bra is damaged? They are soft and damage easy. Bugs stick to them easily. How do you wash them off without damaging the bra more? A bug sponge that is safe on paint will scratch the bra.

You will not have chips in your paint but you will have banged up, scratched up, swirled up and orange peel looking appearance on your car. I rather just have a few chips.

Most bras make the front of the car look worst. They look a little milky and add an orange peel texture to the front of the vehicle.

When heated by the sun they are even easier to damage!

Waxing and polishing around them is a super pain in the **** -

That really sounds like the e-bay clear vinyl. My best friend's Mini is 9 months old now with NO markings on it. She waxes 1-2 times per month with no problems. It's no more difficult to do than with the film off the car. Her 3M stuff is NOT soft, it's a SOLID piece of polyeurothane (I believe that's what those are made of). It does not absorb ANYTHING, it will scratch and chip, but not all the way through to the paint. And like someone said, if it's within the warranty period, it will be replaced for free.

Now I HAVE seen the problems mentioned above with the cheapo clear vinyl. It will also allow paint to fade, whereas the clear bra will not. As a matter of fact, on cars like the Minis that have the optional vinyl stripes, the unprotected area fades MORE than the protected area. Our friend Robin's Mini had the vinyl stripes in black and she had them installed UNDER the 3M film. When they took the film off after 3 years, the part under the film was black as could be, but the part unprotected had faded slightly. There were no paint markings, defects, scratches or anything. The 3M film absolutely DOES NOT damage paint. I've personally seen it come off of upwards of 50 vehicles (most dealers will re-apply when a lease ends so that the new owner will have a brand new film) with not a single paint defect...

Please PLEASE read it completly before you think you know everything, and even that statement is incorrect. It its just as smooth as the paint and bugs don't stick to it and worse than paint and they wash off easy. If this is your proffesion then you have a bit more to learn.

Oh and thanks Alleycat, whenever i think i'm going crazy you pop in and back me up, like in all the LSD threads.

And your probably one of the coolest girls i've had the pleasure of technically meeting. Props to you!

I don't particularly care what that person has to say. It's obvious that you have no personal experience with the 3M film. I do. Others who have posted do. It absolutely DOES NOT cause ANY paint damage what so ever. Every experience I have had with it, and I've seen MANY, dare I say, HUNDREDS of cars with this stuff installed and in many cases reinstalled and have never seen any of these symptoms this so-called "expert" speaks of.

If you don't have personal experience with it, don't post heresay.

Ok lady! I don't have to prove anything to you or anyone on here. That person and I know what we are saying. I do have experience in that field. I'v be detailing car's since you been in diaper's. This is getting to be like a child's play gorund with this thread. You and your buddy can keep on posting on this. I'm done with it.

We were simply correcting misinformation. If you're old enough to have been detailing since I was in diapers then a) you are VERY immature for your age and b) perhaps you should do some more research on the 3M protection film vs a "clear bra" as they are two different things.

Just because you've done something all your life doesn't mean your good at it. I believe what the person was saying is that it will look like it has orange peel, is banged up, and has scratches if the job is done poorly, if it is done the right way it will be smooth and look good. But i guess you can't teach a old dog new tricks.

Look at the little boy from dirtville he can't leave it alone. Just drop it. Like I told your girlfriend I don't have to prove nothing to no one. Especially to someone like you.

my parents have a 2000 ford escape with a 3m clear bra. It got a little chipped over a few years so last year we got it replaced, when the dealer took it off all of the chips with it. The paint under neath was as yellow as ever (it is a yellow car). As far as waxing, i just wax righ over it and use a very fine cloth to remove any excess from around the ridge. I also have the clear bra on my cobalt and it saved my hood from 2 massive rock chips.

Little boy? I don't think so. I may live in dirtville but I'm from Ohio. Someone like me? I enjoy making people like you look foolish and ignorant.

And someone like me can't be to bad of eh?

DEFINITELY have a 3M professional do it. Some dealerships and repair shops are certified. The cool thing here is the local 3M installer comes to your house and puts it on your car in your driveway. VERY convenient and she does one hell of a job. She services ALL the BMW and Lexus dealers around here. If they can trust her, I know I sure as hell can.
