Question?
Question?
So I've been lurking around for a bit now and I just have to ask. Do you all honestly think that a stock or near stock SS/SC is a fast car? I see numerous signatures with "kill" lists in them, most listing cars I wouldn't look twice at let alone waste methanol on. I can appreciate the fact that the car is new and there isn't a lot of aftermarket support out right now. However, when some members are named "stangkiller" or have anti-import statements in their signatures I really begin to wonder what sort of drugs these people must be on to have such delusional thoughts. Perhaps it's just that in the particular area of the country you live in there aren't a lot of modified cars or higher end sports cars running around on the streets. Not so here in south Florida, I drive a pretty fast car yet everyday I see at least 2-3 cars that could hand my ass to me on a plate and I only drive about 8 miles to work. Maybe it's the fact that tracks are open year round here that encourages people to modify cars more heavily than other locales. I'd like to hear some opinions on this so speak up!
I don't know of many faster cars that are more ecomically friendly, both insurance and fuel wise. And honestly, most of the faster cars out there belong on a track, or with a driver who knows how to drive. So, yeah, I don't really think the cars are fast, but they are most certainly far more than people need, too, which makes them faster than the vast majority of cars out there, percentage wise.
I really want this weather to get warmer so I can get to work on the V8's.

You're probably right about the track thing. My car is an 11 second car and I have not run it hard on the street but once in well over a year. 120+ just comes up way too fast.
Yeah, my Evo owner customers don't seem to understand that even with AWD, winters in WI aren't for aggressive driving. lol. Another one totalled Tuesday.
For what a stock SS/SC is, it may not be *FAST* compared to some cars, but it is fast enough to be an inexpensive sports car that gets good gas mileage. Comparing a stock SS/SC to a non-stock car is kind of pointless. Your car maybe an 11 second car, but it wasn't an 11 second car stock. In fact, I bet a stock SS/SC would have been a good run for your car stock.
I don't disagree with you that alot of people think that the stock SS/SC is fast, when in reality it isn't a really fast car, but just with a few mods you CAN be beating mustangs. I don't know how someone in a stock SS/SC can beat one of the brand new mustangs but I don't doubt a stock SS/SC could beat some of the older stock mustangs.
Just my 2 cents on something that has been brought up only about 5000000000000 times.

No. Not really fast. They'll run mid 14s at the track. On the street they can beat most cars that are slower that 13.6 from a roll.
And yes you can beat 10 year old mustang GTs if that is your thing.

When someone asks me this I always say "it depends on what fast is to you?" I then usually ask what the fastest car they have driven is. I can answer there question better from there. I don't think the SS is fast, but I've driven a 360 modena and could insanely modded Camaros. None of those cars were mine by the way. I think those cars are fast. I think the SS is a quick car though, it will surprise a lot of people and it always puts a smile on my face.

Wastegate- I'm sure that your car is reasonably fast for an eclipse. But in your profile you say you have a 4g63 engine, not the 4g63t. So how exactly are you running 11's without a turbo? Or maybe you have a turbo and just don't really know what engine you have. Also what can you claim for gas mileage? 12, 13mpg?
And the final question how much money did you put into your car to run 11's?

Last I checked, Mitsu's Turbo 2.0L was a 4g63, there is not a "t" after the engine code here, in this Mitsu server's breakdown.
The 420a is Chrysler's 2.0L non-turbo engine that was available in 2nd gen Eclipses.
The 4g64 is Mitsu's 2.4L non-turbo engine in Base model Eclipses, Galants, etc.

Exactly. I have my 69 GTO that ran 12.9 with just simple boltons of only $1200. But stock would have run about dead even with the SS/sc. For a car that began the muscle car age I give respect to any car that comes stock that can run with it. My GTO is sorta fast and would waste most things on the street out here in Mesa, AZ, but there are always faster cars and I understand that. Now I bought my Cobalt LS with the mindset that I could make it run low 13's to hight 12's with less than 5G's, and still get about 25mpg. The GTO gets anywhere from 8-12 mpg depending on how far the pedal is down. And for only $1200, runs under 13.

Ahhh, an internet engineer. If you knew as much as you purport about a DSM then you'd know that the 2G body style only came with either a 420A NA motor in the RS and GS trim or the 4g63 FI in the GST and GSX trims. My car, which is a GSX, clearly stated in my profile has the 4g63 motor, which from the factory was turbocharged. The only car to come with the 4g63 motor in NA form in the US was the 90-94 Eclipse GS, Talon ESi and Laser RS.
PS: My car averages 27 mpg around town, cruising with the AC on and 34 on my last highway trip. All that on 880cc injectors too.
What does it matter to you if they are vocal about it or not?
You have an 11 sec. car, and hats off to you for it.
But honestly (and I am not trying to be a dick, I am genuinely curious) what does it matter if people with stock cars think its fast or not? And how does that opinion affect you in any way?
That is amazing that your car gets better gas mileage than any eclipse ever got stock! Most 2nd gen were rated 17/27 with the best mpg even now being 23/30. Your car must be that perfect car that has 700whp on stock internals too right!

to for real our ss/sc is way faster than that eclispe started out stock being... not hating but its the truth... .you go puttin mods on those dsm's then they wake up ... and so does everyother car....
yeah the ss/sc may not be super fast but it is a hard car to beat from a roll

Sorry man, but the vast majority of my GSX and Tsi Awd customers, as well as my Evo customers get WELL UNDER 20 mpg average. Most are happy with 23-24 highway. My wife averaged 25 mpg in our Talong Tsi Awd when she drove it, I tended to average 22-23 myself.

Wouldn't this be the same thing as if I went to, say, the Focus board or the VW board and asked what kind of drugs they are on when they say their cars are fast? Every community has its people who think their cars are fast; its a fact of life. I wouldn't worry about it.
Some people brag... some people don't. Some People love their car... some don't.
Get used to it... that's life. Honda guys think their 17 sec civics are fast... are you on their forum too? Asking why they think they are fast?

Oh I get that. I just thought that there was a chance he had one of those evo race engines designated 4g63 t

Ooohh, an Evo race engine!! Where do you think the 4g63 originated? In a Galant, which is the same platform the Eclipse has been built on since 89. Evo's didn't show up until 92. My car doesn't make 700whp, probably more like 420-430 but it does do it on stock internals and will continue to do so for years to come. As for my MPG, is it that far fetched to believe a 2 litre 8.5:1 compression motor with a large turbo can't get decent mileage? Driven like a normal person would and the car never sees boost around town. Any more questions?
I wasn't trying to put down the SS necessarily. I half expected this pissing match that the thread has become. Someone else said it above, speed is relative. What are you comparing it to?
I've said it before, and not been understood, but PRODUCTION EVO's started in the 90's in Japan, but they had Race versions of the Lancer in the 70's which they called Evo's back then. lol. Regardless, Mitsu needs to put a nice turbo 4 into a lightweight coupe. I don't want no four doors, even at my employee pricing, lol. Ok, fine, if I have to! *Runs up to sales and asks if the computerized build system for the X is ready yet*

Yea, I think the cobalt ss/sc is a fast car. You know why? I can run 12s with a 75k bumber to bumber warnity. With all GM bolt ons. I think for less then 25k total into a brand new car running 12s is very impressive. What happens if your 11second car breaks? Empty that pocket book or should I say purse. Go troll somewhere else.
wastegate
As of right now I think the cobalt is quick not fast just quick. For the fact that its running mid 14s stock. The fact the car has only been out for 2 full model years and is bearly getting traction for aftermarket is whats going to make the car fast. you stated that you have a bigger turbo. what happens if you had the stock turbo whould you be able to run 12s? the limit on ours right now is the stock sc we are finally bearly able to trade to another one and even then we will only be able to trade to that. now suppose we go turbo. there is already someone running 3xxwhp. it all depends on what you want to talk about. how much did you invest in your eclipse in tunning equipment, the fuel system, and all your mods?

Your mpg became extremely far fetched when you said you have 800cc injectors. I don't care if you don't get into boost. If the car didn't originally get 35 mpg how is it supposed to when you are dumping in almost 1 1/2 times the fuel.
If you were expecting what was going to happen why the hell did you feel the need to post? How about doing something constructive with your time.
I consider my GTO a fast car since it only took me $1200 in simple bolt ons to get it under 13 seconds. But I guess when you have your mommy and daddy's check book, you can put a turbo on anything and make it an 11 second car.
