ran over someting. what happend to my car?

so i was on my way to the gym and theres a semi in front of me, and out of no where i see a full exhaust just laying in the road! i tried to avoid it but it was hard with all the traffic and my right front n rear tires went over it. i was oging about 50 mph. i pulled over to see if there was any damage but there wasnt any. when i started driving again my steering kinda felt loose, liek it wasnt as tight as before. felt liek it had some play. then, on the way home, on the guage cluster comes up POWER STEERING and i had no power steering!! i went to get gas, looked under my hood n couldnt find any problems, turn my car on and it was fine. wtf happend?

p.s. the steering is still a lil loose feeling

You probably need an alignment. A tie rod might also be loose.

THe alignment isn't going to screw up your power steering. Though you might/ prolly need one now. LOL Does the car pull to the left or right?

I would say check your power steering pump and fluid, it might have been damaged causing a leak or just broke something within the pump.

when the power steering message comes on it is because the electric motor gets overheated and cuts off to cool down-usually when doing a lot of parking lot manuevers or has an issue with the steering column. if ur under warranty, go to the dealer. even if it is not happening when you take it in there should be a code stored in the computer for it. usually it is an electrical failure in the steering column which requires replacement. at my dealership we see this on cobalts, hhrs and newer malibus a good bit.
