All of my cars have been stick so I know how to drive one. And my previous cars were a Jeep Wrangler and f150 neither resemble a cobalt. Speak for yourself not everyone else.

I've had some issues with the tranny, but I believe they had more to do with how the car was driven before I purchased (97 miles). Other than paint and a couple trim issues, every other problem I've had has been service related. Really no worse than any other car I've owned or even driven. But considering I knew I was buying a souped-up econo-car, I feel no disappointment. I got what I payed for, maybe even a little more.

My parents came in to visit this past weekend driving a Ford Focus rental. After one quick ride with them in it, I must say I appreciate my Cobalt far more than ever. My throat is still sore from trying to talk over the road and engine noise...

My SVTF focus had a 6-speed, and it was worse that the 5-speed in the SS. Also, the cars you're comparing the SS to are $25k+ cars. A new GTI with similar options (leather, premium sound, etc) costs almost $30k!!!! So, yea, for that kind of money, it's going to be better than an SS. You complain about AWD? Have you looked at the price of a WRX, STi or Evo lately?
The SS is currently the bext bang for the buck compact out. the '06 si is close, but isn't as fast. I agree that Hyundai is catching up the GM as far as quailty goes.

P.S. have fun with your Ford3 (mazda3).

I think its a definite success...i have no idea what your thinkn "etool"....but what i do know is this car is great, if you know how to drive, and I HOPE YOU REALIZE THAT YOUR THE FIRST TO RANT ABOUT THIS, WHICH MEANS YOUR 1 IN A 100000000 TO NOT LIKE THIS CAR...
..but good luck finding a car with better character and muscle than the SS/SC for its price

I've owned alot of Chevys in my life to (die hard chevy Fan Here)

i currently own 96 Monte Carlo z/34 lumina
69 camaro ss black on white (fully Restored w/502 crate motor)
2002 chevy Express 3500
& 2006 ss/sc Yellow w/inserts

I can honestly say they all had there problems with some cheap parts. But that is to be xpected. Not 1 Car out there is PROBLEM FREE!

I think Chevy & Gm are on track to Finally give the imports a run for there Money & Kick the Crap out of them at the same time.
To buy a new product line the 1st year & xpect there not to be flaws is
By the way the Cobalts will get better with time wats Mazada & all the rest going to do then redesign to keep up then they will have the same problems as the balts do now (So u should Have waited till next year when all the Qinks worked out.

When Etool first started his rant I was boiling. Now there are some minor issues it appears which I believe Chevy will stand behind. I have heard of other cars having their issues also though (recalls & such) so we are not alone. I'LL NEVER BUY HONDA!!!!!!!!!

Hey Etool, what it may lack, ENHANCE like the rest of us.

Go buy your little puss car Mazda (zoom zoom zoom). Oh yeah, & spend 3000 more for the base 6 series because the 3 series will get our exhaust busted all over it. & the 3 series looks like a half-butted attempt & a sporty compact vehicle.

& the performance & looks of the SC blows it away w/o mods.

Go over to www.mazdaowners.com.

Oh, sorry, there probably isn't a site with loyal owners like ours.

Do all of us a favor after you finish this rant & leave the site!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Actually, I drove a CORVETTE and am perfectly pleased with this car. I don't know why you would even waste your time and join a COBALT site to hate on the car. If you don't like the car trade it in and bag on that next car. Don't even talk about any of our driving abilities when you know no one.

This is why I hate the internet b/c in real life when someone is a tool, you can kick their a$$!!!

MY turn...

I used to own a Mazda 6....It was a nice car but, cannot compare to the performance of the cobalt ss/sc 2.0 ...The mazda claim 220 hp...yeah right...5 speed dog more like it.
I don't own a cobalt ss/sc 2.0 but, i have test drove two of them and I am impressed!!

I am saving my pennies to own one. Yes I too dont want a large payment. VW..too expensive and not enough power..

HYundai...give me a break ...wouldn't bother to be seen in one!!!

What other car gives you such bang for the buck ???

One last thing...what car company gives the mods to upgrade and warranties as well...

GM Will!!!

I 've said my peace.

Enjoy your car...or you can sign it over to me for a $1.00 and I will do the enjoying!!!

I think anyone who intentionally signs up to the "Main" Cobalt enthusiast site in order to vent on how much they hate the Cobalt is a troll. Whether or not they own one is irrelivent. You came to the wrong forum looking for a hug IMHO.

Otherwise Im sure you got the response you probably thought you would, hope you enjoy your Mazda.

I have to disagree with you ther. GM is very slow at getting us ss/sc's some mods. Mopar on the other hand has everything you could want for the srt line up.

I respect your opinion, and you are certainly entitled to it. In my own experience, I have to disagree with you. Also, I have read some very good reviews of the Cobalt, especially the SS/SC.

I haven't driven any of the current competion of the Cobalt, but I think the Cobalt is a fantastic car! I have a wide array of experience with GM cars from the Cavalier to the Camaro or Corvette. That being said, I have not driven a car better than this from the General since the '04 Z06 I was lucky enoug to drive.

The interior materials, while still plastic, look nice and fit well. Build quality is excellent. No shakes or rattles. The chassis is super strong, not the flexible noodle that was the Cavalier/Sunfire of yesteryear. The engine is both reliable and powerful. The 5-speed has good ratios, and shift quality is only second to the Corvette's transmission. The Recaro seats (part of the G85 performance package) are some of the best seats I have ever sat in! They remind me of sitting in a C5 Corvette fitted with the optional sport seats. I know that I am not the only one who thinks this way, because I see people catching a look at my car all the time. People who have been in my car comment on how "nice" it is. Further, the car is very quiet when driven around in an everyday situation. Yet, when I wanna go and step on the exhaust, there is a nice bark coming out of the engine bay and the exhaust! I think there are very few things that I would change on this car if I could. I for one am very impressed with it, and would buy one again if anything happened to my current car (knocking on wood...)!

And I am sick of everyone whinning about the 5-speed unit on this car. Those of you who think this car needs a 6-speed need to re-evaluate what you know about engines and transmissions! Yes, it may have been nice, but it would not have made this car any faster than it already is. It would only mean that you have to shift more often!

For example, consider these points:

1) The LSJ and 2.4L have a wide powerband, meaning the use of a 6-speed is unnecessary and would onyl result in more shifting!

2) Most of the competitors who have a 6-speed transmision only utilize 5 of the 6 gears. In most cars, like the '06 Civic Si, fifth gear is a very tall overdrive gear. Too tall to be used to accelerate in. So these cars reach their top speed in fifth. Sixth only exists for increasing fuel economy while cruising. The Corvette, Z06, and Viper all use a six-speed gearbox, but reach top speed in 5th gear. Sixth on these cars is only to lower the EPA fuel conomy ratings. So why, I ask, should we have a useless cog that we'd only use on the highway at best, when most of us are flogging around a city with this car?

3) DSG??? The VW is the only car in this range that uses this type of transmission. I don't see Honda, Nissan, Ford, or Chyrsler using this on their entry level, compact cars! Previously, only Audi, Porsche, Lambourghini (all three owned by VW), Ferrari, BMW and a few others have offered these types of semi-automatic shifting sytems with a computer controlled clutch. Hell, even Mercedes doesn't! They offer fully controllable auto transmissions, but they have no clutch!

You know, easily passing people on the highway in 5th gear always puts a smile on my face.

The Cobalt SS/SC seems to do everything well. Kudos to the GM performance guys!!

Exactly. No downshifting for highway passing! There is a good exapmle of a 5-speed advantage! In the Civic Si, you probably need to drop into 4th, just so you can dip into the V-tech power!

I am just one of GM's shattered soldiers. I own a 2005 Black on black Cobalt ss/sc. I have been faithful to GM, mainly chevy since before I even knew how to drive. I've owned an 88' monte carlo ss, 87' camaro IROCZ,73' El Camino and a 2005 Colorado. For me it's always been Chevy. No matter what anyone says. I loved there products and there legacy. In the 50's 60's and 70's GM was instrumental to the american auto industries growth. They had fresh desighns, awsome power plants and were on the cutting edge of everything. WHAT THE **** HAPPENED! Their once proud legacy has been in slow decline over the past 30+ years, Losing RWD, not keeping up with market trends, half assed attempts at prefomance products. O.K O.K yeah theve got their trucks and cadillac and of couse the darling corvette. But what about the bread and butter cars. What about the cars everyday Joe coffes can afford. Almost every competiter's car in any class is superior to the GM product. Every comparison test I see if it's got somethig from GM in there, it's in last place. I try, have tried, for years to convince myself that EVERY car magazine is biased toward imports. Thats just not the case is it. Imorts are on the cutting edge now, the newest technology and BMW never gave up on rear drive so why did chevy? Why? DSG transmissions, AWD, DOHC,5 hell even 6 speed autos not to mention ipod. The import cars got what the public wants. Not GM. Will they ever catch up? And lets not even talk about interior Quality. Face it we now live in a world were Hyndais are better cars than Chevys. More standard features, more options, better warrentys and more with the times. It seems for every one step GM takes forward they take two back. There products look good on paper, but they turn out half baked. Which brings us to the Cobalt ss/sc. I lusted after this car for months when I first read about it. Fnally a new car from Chevy that really sparks my intrest. I did what ever I had to do to get one. It took 3 months for mine to come in. After living with it for a year I see just how lacking it truly is compared to the competition. The interior scks and is made with cheap materials. 5 speed in the age of 6 speeds not to mention DSG. The new VW GTI has a nicer interior and better features than the cobalt. Sure it's not as fast on paper. But it's a nicer car. Just like we say when we compare to the SRT4. This is the most dissapointing car I've ever owend. It has'nt even been out for that long and the comp. has already surpassed it. When news of the car first came out, the whole sport compact community looked to see. The the ones who hoped for the best ended up dissapointed. And the ones that new better laughed and keep laughing at this poor, half assed excuse for a sport compact. This bloated supercharged cavalier. American rice. GM just trying to keep up and only nipping at the heels of the comp. nice in thought. Poor execution.Waste of money, waste of time,oh well. Will they ever make something groundbreaking again. Something that makes the comp. shake with fear. Probably not. Either way, I'm not waiting around to see.Guess I'll trade it in for a Mazdaspeed 3. Sorry for the rant. But it had to be done. Call me a traitor or an import fan boy. But no matter what you try and tell yourself, you know, DEEP down that every word I put down is truth.

Ashamed owner of the worst car in the world.
Mazda is owned by ford. So it's not an import you'll be buying. Just wanted to clear that up real quick.

As for interior. Got news for you, GM's cars have always been about horsepower and torque, not convenience. To date, the only GM vehicle I have ever been in that had a truly nice interior is the Corvette. IMO. GM has always been about cheap horsepower. Ford used to be that way too, but take a look around nowadays and Ford is trying to throw all that stuff into their mustangs, and every year the price is going up and up and up. In the next 5 years the Mustang will end up pricing itself out of the market, much like the Toyota Supra, the Camaro, etc.

Certain models of VW's have had recalls in recent years for the side view mirror assemblies just falling off the car as people drive down the street. (Made in Mexico comes to mind here.)

Ford mustangs, I think it was in 2002-2003, Had the wheel flaking issue on their rims. It was deemed a defect and they were usually replaced for most people with a lot of fighting (some just opted to buy aftermarket rims and left it at that.) In the 98's they had the intake manifold issue (it was plastic, and it was cracking, causing all kinds of problems.)

Honda's reputation for quality far exceeds what it actually provides nowadays. The last great bullet proof honda was of the 1998 civic generation. (The first redesign in 2000 or 2001 suffered horribly from suspension problems.)

BMW's are having quality issues out the yin yang, including idle problems and some models have had to have the software rewritten because the cars weren't starting in cold whether in recent years.

Hyundai/Kia, You go man, buy one of those cars, and spend the next 5 years upside down in a car that FEELS like it's going to fall apart on you every single mile you drive it. (my wife had not one, but two, they SUCK.) We had to replace the front trans axle after owning the second one for 2 years. the A/C compressor had to be replaced 3 times. We had to spend $600.00 to have the brakes redone because the rotors are so cheap/thin we found out they can't be turned at all. So everytime you replace brakes you are forced to replace rotors too. Our dash board had to be replaced in BOTH cars because it actually BURNED and CURLED up blocking the front window. it was caused by the SUN and nothing else. (and we had to fight with them because they whined about how long it would take them to replace the dash board.) Not ONCE were we offered a loaner car.

The late 90's Mazda 6's suffered from major electrical problems. They were fantastic cars when they worked, the problem was, they were always in the shop.

Lastly, the Paint Chipping problem spans across all of the car lines these days. They're putting the pain on extremely thin to cut costs, so buying a bottle of touch up paint, no matter the make or model of the car, is mandatory.

I have no clue about the Mazda 3's, but do the research before you buy.

And I really think that's what it all comes down to. You didn't do the research before you bought. And for that, my friend, you have no one to blame but yourself.

So what'd we get with our Cobalt? We got a car with a 5 year warranty, under $265.00 a month, free tires for the life of the car, free roadside assistance, free LOANER's if we have to leave our car with the dealership for more than 2 hours. Etc. Yeah, we spent 9 hours in the dealership and we wheedled them down on EVERYTHING. But for 9 hours of work we saved 4 grand.

Dude, That's pretty damn good for a car that cost just 1,000 more than the Kia. (And hey, the new Spectra's? They go for 2k MORE than what we paid for the Cobalt.)

P.S. What kind of Wax do you use? If it's not meguiars, Zaino's or Mother's, then you're not taking really good care of your paint. :P

u know this guy is a dweeb really he goes back and forth and never makes up his mind, lol neway i would buy a cobalt in a heartbeat if the money was given to me but i got other plans in mind so i bought a cheapo 01 sunfire cause the minor issues of sunfires had already been ironed out by then and there is/was a huge aftermarket for these cars too.
