I have a 2005 Cobalt coupe (base model), that hit a freeway wall at ~35mph a couple winters ago (air bags did not deploy).. it has been sitting in storage.. anyone know how much it would be to bend the bumper support back? (see pic). Otherwise I'll just part it out...

Does it need any kind of inspections?
The best way to repair upper rad supports on most cars is to drill the spot welds out and replace with a new/used one.
If it does not need inspections, disconnect everything attached and buy yourself some clamps and vise grips and go to town bending it back into place. Its just lite gauge metal and is not hard to bend.

Anyway it'd probably cost more to fix than the car's worth if you did it correctly.

 

Oh **** i didnt notice that, Id probably still try and bend that back. Or cut off and weld a new piece in.

Find a local shop with a frame machine and ask for a quote, hard for people here to guess at it, it's not something you can do as a lay person and make it right. If the rail is bent it would be totalled by the insurance company due to repair cost being more than the car is worth, especially on an 05 base model.

 

No they wouldn't. They might bend it straight for $1000. But you won't get the rail replaced for that price.

I wouldn't let anyone I cared about into a car with such a hacked repair.

 

lmao hacked repair, you are judging something that has not even been repaired yet and only has one picture of the damage.

You do realize that on a unibody car the integrity of the unibody directly effects how it reacts in a crash? So by just cutting and welding you've made a weak point that breaks instead of crumples, depending on the crash depends on the outcome. Not a gamble worth taking over a car you can replace for 2-3k.

 

I work in trade. Metal bent twice is work hardened it won't react the same in a collision.
