Shaking front end?

So every time i go to hit the breaks there is a shaking feeling coming through the break pedal and I have no clue what is wrong. I have R1 Concept drilled and slotted rotors and hawk pads that are about a year old. Do the front rotors need to be turned?

BRAKES... not breaks.

And if it only happens when you are applying brake pressure, then the rotors are probably a good place to start.

before people assume rotors are warped... first way to check for warped rotors. for the most part you should feel the shake ALOT more once the brakes are heated up. so when you first start driving it shouldnt be too bad. but once you have broke alot it should just get worse. now. a quick little test to know if its fronts or rears would be when you feel the shaking where do you feel it? if ur front rotors are warped ull feel it in your steering wheel alot. if its ur rears ull feel it mostly in ur butt. in the seat. if it is literally in the pedal only it may be more complex then just a rotors.

What year is your Cobalt? Have you had it anywhere for it to be looked at already?

Shaking during braking = warped rotors
Shaking during driving = tire balance
Shaking during a turn = wheel alignment

thats my half cent

I would agree that most of the time this will hold true.

Also look into control arm bushings, I replaced my brakes since they needed to be done anyways and I still have slight shake between 60-70. That is a very common thing to go bad in the base models. And does your suspension clunk when you go over any bumps?

The CAB's won't cause a shake... they'll usually cause a hard clunk.

Ok well not to hijack the thread but at about 60-65 mph when I brake my pedal and my steering wheel shake. And there's almost like a clunking noise in what seems like the steering column. And only when I hit a bump.

Bump causing a clunk could be sway bar end links... could be a variety of other things, as well.

If you push in the brake pedal... and your steering wheel shakes. Its almost always your brake rotors. Either buy new ones... or get your current ones resurfaced.

Cobalt owners are the biggest group of brake warpers I've ever met. Brake early and soft, not late and hard. After hard braking, don't stand on the brake pedal while you wait at the stop light/sign. If you have to hold the brake because you're on a hill or something, stop plenty short so that you can let up on the pedal a bit and let the car slowly inch itself forward. When you're sitting at a light holding the brakes, the part being held by the pads stays hot... the rest of the rotor starts to cool. What do you think happens next? Warped brakes.

Yeah but the weird thing is is that it is only between 60-65 mph. Any higher, no shake. Any lower, no shake.

Probably a gremlin then. Those little buggers can be trouble once they latch on to something.

as long as they avoid driving in water the gremlin shouldnt get too bad. i have the shaking in the front end also. just bought this car 4 months ago. im going to replace front rotors because mine are slotted and dimpled (no idea where previous owner bought them, cant find them anywhere myself) they cant be resurfaced because the resurfacing machines bits would get messed up. ive already tried to ask. pepboys wont let me do it and i work there lol. guess ill go with sp performance powerslot ones on OTTP's site. They're on sale right now!! as well as a lot of other stuff

Only hard part of braking soft and early is the "SQUUUUEEEEEEEEEEL" SO embarrassing I was also told by dealer to drive the car like it was meant too and brake harder Now I have horrible brakes at 60k, mostly highway kilometers. I can't find a middle ground yet with these cars I did notice if you get good at heel toe downshifting you can rock 1st gear downshift while lightly braking, love that RC car sound of 1st. But 2nd gear to neutral is so much easier.

So it was my rotors causing most of the issues, there is still a bit of vibration but i think that has to do with my alignment so im going for an alignment next week.

My mechanic checked the whole suspension on the car and found no other issues so i guess the rotors were that bad.
