So I just bought this cobalt...

its a 2006 SS/SC (G85) with 27,000 miles. It's mint. Anyway it already has a K&N CAI, Stage II, and a GMPP exhaust. Here is my problem. ITS EFFING LOUD! way too loud. So I crawled under it to check it out.

I have this exhaust:

But the previous owner (GM Tech) took out the muffler and welded in a straight pipe. No big deal, but I need to either 1. put the one it came with back in. or 2. A different alternative. I'm all for nice sounding cars... but this is a little bit over the top. Plus I live in a very dense residential area and I really don't wanna be "that guy with the fartcan exhaust"

So here is my question. What would css.net do to fix the problem? Should I just buy any muffler and weld it in? Whats the best? What would you do if it was your car?

I would go with a completely different exhaust, the gmpp piping is only 2.25 and 2.5 would be ideal. Have a shop make one up for you, that's the route I went and I'm currently using a large dynomax superturbo muffler.

got me one of these recently:

MEGAN CAT-BACK EXHAUST 06-07 COBALT SS SUPERCHARGED N1 | eBay

and it is less than half the cost of the average Corsa's and Magnaflows (starting at the great price of $7xx? REALLY? Made of GOLD?). This thing has a removable silencer on it and it is decently quiet but if you punch it it has some decent rumble. Put it this way, it is HARDER to remove the OLD exhaust than it is to put this thing ON the car!!! My old exhaust was some cobble of the stock exhaust going over the axle and then put into a 2 1/2 pipe that went to some unnamed muffler which was butt welded (2 1/2 pipe to 2 1/2 muffler) that eventually collapsed the inner metal retainer and dropped the fiberglass mat in the way and BLEW the muffler at its seam.

Put a large resonator on it, that should help.

That is probably one of the loudest exhausts you can buy

DO NOT BUY THE MEGAN RACING EXHAUST! you may think its cool for a week or two, but when you have to hear that thing constantly you will hate it, trust me. I bought one cause it was cheap. just don't.

I agree. It's very loud on my car and I have an extremely restrictive stock exhaust manifold and catted dp on a 2.2L. I plan on cutting off the muffler and getting something else this summer on my Megan exhaust. The silencer will take you from a 4inch opening to probably 1.5 (so your basically going down from 2.5 to 1.5 at the very end), I don't see the point in riding around with the silencer permanently to lower the sound and having an after market exhaust. There a few good options muffler and resonator wise.

if your not going to do the full exhaust just do a little research on a Quiet hi flow muffler. ive heard super turbo used allot (although people often cut it down) and A freind of mine wasnt happy with how loud is car was so he swapped his muffler out for a Walker Quiet flow. It is significantly quieter until you get on it. So hiway it doesnt drone but when you slam it its louder than stock.

Unless you run very high levels of boost or do a turbo swap you wont benefit from 3 inch exhaust more than 1-2 hp. Its a sound mod.
Get a hiflow catted or catless down pipe and you will see a good gain. 12-15 if you tune for it.
(stock cars you wont gain more than better turbo spool from bolt ons) very minimal Hp gain as the ECM will adjust for the new air levels. Flows easier makes hp easier it cuts Boost to match...

I was looking at it the night I got it... Very dark out... car was on the ground... Anyway because of this I must have completely missed it but the muffler IS there. I guess its just a combination of the header, and exhaust that makes it that much louder. Guess I'll have to live with it.

I will confirm, caliper says 1.975 for my Megan silencer. As for loud, no, the previous "___ rig" was some unnamed muffler (bought the car this way) that ended up rusting out its internal metal fiberglass retainer...which then collapsed and put the 'glass in harms way and BOOM! blew the seam, fiberglass and steel wool out of it. I put it back together with a 2.5" pipe with some holes drilled in it and 'glass insulation from the attic. That is about as loud as it can be without going straight pipe or removing the silencer out of this thing I have now. Sure, if you remove the silencer, then it isn't silencing any more, then sure, it will be loud. I've had it for a month, still no louder. Thanks for making me sad, kinda feel cheated from the specs that were provided, what is the point of specs if u'r gonna lie about it? Guess it is back to Ebay and give them a BAD rating for lying.
So you 'sperts, now that I already own this Megan thing A) tried to remove the silencer after removing the (2) nuts and bolts without damaging the silencer and can't seem to get it out, suggestions? Then B) is there a real 2.5" silencer that is available that will fit this thing that should have been on this thing in the first place? If there is one, then I don't care about killing the current silencer to get it out.

You could probably buy a flowmaster muffler and have it welded in.

or just go get a universal resonator from summit racing and weld it in before the axle over. It really quiets it down quite a bit.

For the record.. the SS/SC Gains power from the 2.25 GMP Exhaust. Its been dyno proven a few times over the years on this forum. I believe the jonyb made 13whp or something on the dyno. Either way, PM CED and they could get you the muffler that belongs with that system.

keep the catback. it's an excellent product just have the muffler from that gmpp catback welded back on and you'll be very happy with it. Don't worry about it being 2.25". as mike said it's had proven gains. it is a very good catback.

My silencer is not a Megan silencer but an eBay 1.5 . Its pretty common that silencers are almost impossible to get out. I probably would have ripped my exhaust off before I got the silencer out. I had a buddy bring over his slide hammer and it came out after a few tries. After that I sanded mine down a bit and use one of those penetrating fluids. Now, one the bolts are out I can usually remove it by hand, if I need with the pliers. You'll probably have to find a 2.5in silencer on eBay somewhere..Last time I called Megan they said they were super back ordered (like months and months) and only had one size. You might want to look into the super turbo muffler or a stainless version from stainless works (I think that's the company).
