Spinning at 80?!?! or....
Spinning at 80?!?! or....
Coming back from school a nice yellow SRT8 charger pulled up behind me on I-255, he passed me before I had a chance to give him the *nod* so I caught back up to him and pulled beside. He rolled down his window and did a 1, 2, 3, with his hand and we gunned it...
We were doing about 75 so I threw it in third and hammered it, and it felt like i was spinning, so I checked out my RPM, it was feathering between 6 and 7K, was pretty sure it wasn't redlining, but have hardly ever pushed my car that far before...
Anyway, with the race, was pretty even till about 100-110 then he started to pull on me so I backed off.....

I have only had my stock clutch slip on me twice in a very agressive 65,000 miles. Once was when i tried to launch in second to give my brother a better chance at beating me.
I have had a few people slip my clutch bad with me yelling from the passenger seat the it was the clutch burning not the tires as they continued to floor it. They then lose there driving privileges for a while

I have spun my tires at 80. No lie. I was changing across 4 lanes from a left side entrance ramp to an exit almost straight across here in michigan. 275 south to 96 east getting off on newburgh for all of you locals. Burned a tire good. Have done it other times too. My 06 has no rear anti sway and will push in corners at around th 80mph+ mark. You have to spin the fronts to recover. so yes it is very possible you ere spinning!

Unless it was wet out and he armor all'ed his tire treads like this dimwit my.is/forums, I'd have to say I'm with the other guys here and going with clutch slippage.
It can happen on a good clutch if the surface gets over heated. A number of years back I was in my old BMW playing with a WRX and after some *cough* spirited driving I grabbed 4th instead of 2nd and just rev'ed to no end, followed up with that wonderful I'm-teaching-my-girlfriend-to-drive-stick smell.

I agree with this.
As your trying to select third gear, press clutch, push shifter from whatever gear you were in, to third while at the same exact time, lay your right foot on the throttle for however ever long/deep you must in order to bring up to the revs to what you need for 3rd, which is typically a good stab; 75 mph for cobalt would have been around 4,900rpms give or take (its been a while I dont remember exactly but I remember 3rd going until about 90ish then 4th to 120), let go of the clutch once the revs are there and at the same time as letting the clutch go, you sink your foot back into the throttle to match it like a normal shift. Its a very quick and coordinated movement...dont think the amount of time to read this is the same as the time it takes to do this this because it isn't.
Perhaps your clutch is shot too, but just trying to give you a pointer or two for the next clutch you get lol
