thinking about a custom hood. bad idea?

so tax season is here.. i did not get back much, and i really wanted the hood like on the awesome COBALT-ADDICTION website

but those types of hood are way expensive.
so i found a website with instructions on how to build your own custom hood. it does not seem too hard actually. http://www.nicoclub.com/articles.php?id=168601
all i need are some of the tools, and a stock hood. oddly enough, stock hoods are only 230 from chevy primed, and on ebay they are about 240. lol. i am about to order the hood in 2 hours, so i would like to see what everyones opinions are.

also if anyone could give me an idea on how to make a water shield to put over it when it rains that would be cool too.

Hey nomoreavril, has anyone ever told you that your car looks a lot like JRanger's car?

Anywho, I'd go w/ an already made hood.....much easier.

Id say go for it if you want that unique look. Take your time on every aspect of the process and I don't see how you can go wrong. If you have the tools and time etc, definatly do this.

A custom hood is great, but you need to take in account the time you'll spend cutting and shaping it, and then the amount of money you'll spend on bondo and primers and sanding devices and then how much it will be to get it painted. Also, the $150 it is for shipping making it about $400 for a stock unpainted hood. After that, it may or may not be as good or better than the custom hoods for sale, but id definitely won't be carbon fiber.

If you do decide to go with your own custom hood, i'd get someone's used hood that is for sale for $100 or so in the classifieds.

ok so being as my first hood was a custom made piece and knowing a few people who have done it i can tell you this...if you buy and mold a scoop...you are likely to eventually get cracks in the hood with heat regardless of how careful you are. its the nature of the materials used to make a custom hood.

yeah i know all the little stuff will add up, but i just ordered the hood from chevy and it was 258 with tax, and they have it in a warehouse so i can pick it up monday. and it also comes primered.

and true i do have a guy that can paint it for low price if i buy the paint, but i will most likely end up taking it to chevy. but as of now i can't decide on what to -try- to make the hood look like

Buy A fiber glass scoop cut a hole above the air box that is a few mm bigger than the scoop its self but not too big that scoops outer lip can go through. scuff the surface good on the scoop and the mounting aria on the hood And run a good bead of RTV silicon around the mounting area when that drys you can reenforce it with some JB Weld On the bottom along the outer edge.

itrenz sells one like the pic of donna's car in fibreglass for 400 i think. vented.

i saw this douche had actually made a scoop out of wood and painted iut with a brush. his spolier was made out of 2x6 as well. roflmao.
he even red greened out and sealed it with duct tape, and used angle brackets to screw it to the hood.
i never got close enuf to see if he actually had a hole cut in the hood. i was too busy laughing out loud.

well the two people helping me work at a metal fabrication shop and one is a welder. is it impossible to just use thin sheets of metal as the supports instead of fiberglass and weld it and then have it painted? not that thats what i was planning to do, just was an idea.

a lot of you, including my girlfriend, make me feel like i am not capable of this kind of job lol, can dealerships cancel an order and refund my money?

Refund your money for the hood they should but there might be a re-stocking fee

i still think that what will happen is you are going to pay just as much for this hood and materials then you would for one already made...if you're going to go with the same style as the others i would say buy a hood already made. its so much easier.
plus u dont know how the other will turn out. if the hood isnt already in your possession, u should be able to cancel without a restocking fee.

i dont think anyone is doubting your talent to build a hood...i just think people are saying that the negatives far outweigh the positives here and you are much better off buying something you know wont crack etc.
