Towing the 'balt
My stepfather used to be an auto-hauler, and he always used chains under the body, but to prevent potential damage you'll probably prefer nylon ratchet straps. Make sure to inspect them thoroughly before use. To prevent potential wear and tear, put some cardboard between the strap and wear it's holding down the vehicle. This saves wear and tear on the straps and your car.
You're going to also want to check your state's rules concerning the minimum tie down requirements. For example, when I'm working, and we're hauling around street light poles, we have to have enough tie downs for 1.5X the total weight of the load. Due the length of the poles, this really has never been a problem. However, we're also using 3" wide nylon straps rated for more than just a few tons.
Good luck with the tow.
