Trading SS/SC in on 300C
A quick update guys! I have no idea how to post pics but I will try to take some and figure it out later. If someone wants to pm me with a "dummies guide to pic posting" i would be more than grateful!
I got a Vanilla 2006 300C with 35000 miles on it for 23K plus tag, tax and warranty. They paid off my cobalt plus gave me 500 bucks.
Let me just say that this car is amazing. Its sooo nice to hear the V8 (as quiet as it is) and all the chirps, rattles, and buzzing noise that my cobalt made are replaced by absolute quiet!!
No wheel hop, no traction issues (unless i want it), just as many looks, and rediculous luxuries such as adjustable pedals, rain sensing wipers and heated seats. Not to mention this car will blow the doors off my broken-**** cobalt. Plus a ginormous back seat for teh ladiez [or prolly just my mooching buddies ;( ]
My only complaints are that there is no spare tire or jack (doh, forgot to check that) and a medium ding on the trunk that I looked over while inspecting it.
Also, the best gas mileage i have gotten to date is like 25.2mpg. So gas is gonna hurt but it is recommended for 87 instead of 93, so thats a few bucks here or there.
Its got a sun roof and very nice sound system, however its braking and handling isn't quite up to par with the cobalt (duh). And its governed at 130mph, but hopefully i can change that soon with a programmer.
pics to come!

Sorry for the bad quality pics. It was taken using a busted up camera phone in bad weather. But you get the idea.
However it really wasn't the quality of the cobalt that made it into a lemon, nor was it necessarily customer service. I mean the techs I took it to were really nice people and honestly did there best to find out what was wrong with it.
The problem here is, lack of knowledge. 99% of the people I took my car to had no idea what it was or have never seen the LSJ before. Much less did they know how to install a stage 2 kit!
I think the official stats say that 3% of all cobalts sold are the 2.0. So many remote dealerships have no idea how it should perform or what are the common problems with them.
I mean when you take someone a car with 131hp, and show them the dyno sheet. And then they drive it and think it feels "plenty fast", then you have ignorance, not incompetence to blaim.

U should of tried and fought for a new car that is a lemon you should of contacted GM. I know this guy who got a brand new 2007 CTS-V Cadi and the car had no power what so ever. The lower end of the motor was shot and they fixed it and still the same problem no power at all couldn't beat a 10 speed mountain bike. After all the BS he talked to main GM and they got him a brand new car. But that sucks big time man good luck with the C

And heres the kicker, after I paid to have it dyno'd, and brought the Dyno sheet to the dealership and showed it to them. They said that GM doesn't recognize Dyno's.
According to them there is nothing "wrong" with the car. GM isn't going to dyno the car or race a bone stock ss/sc and compare the difference.
If any of you can learn anything from this, then remember this. Do NOT trust the butt dyno. My car felt fine until I raced an Acura RSX-S from a digg and got SPANKED.
On another note, my Gtech was only 7hp off of the dyno i went to. Definately a worthy purchase for anyone not close to a drag strip.
Being down some 80hp, the "butt dyno" should have been WAY, WAY off as well.
And being down some 80hp, I don't see how the throttle response could have been anything else but horrible.
Oh well, good luck with your 300c anyway. And here's what C&D got with a 300c hemi:
0-60 mph: 5.9 seconds
1/4 mile: 14.4 sec. @ 99 mph
skidpad: 0.77g
Same acceleration as a stock SS/SC, but with twice the room!
Just take it easy on the curves buddy, because the 300c is down almost .2g from that of the SS/SC.
You said the car was making 130hp on the dyno, as opposed to the 210-215hp that it should have been making.

The acceleration of the 300 is definately impressive for such a big car. The curbweight is close to 4100lbs compared to the balt's 2990lbs.
Stock for stock it would be a good race (for a properly working balt). However the RWD+weight+traction control of the 300 makes for very strong and consistent launches. Compare that to the crapshoot of a stock SS/SC launch and you have a pretty decisive advantage.
I think i would take a SS/SC off the line and through the 1/8th. However the 1/4 would be pretty close depending on the competence of the SS/SC's driver. I have seen a few low 14second time slips and even a high 13 or two with fresh tires from some 300's, I cant say the same thing for the SS/SC.
I think a roll race would go to the SS/SC in some cases, especially considering that I am governed at 130 (prolly actually 128). I have a buddy with a bone stock SS/SC that I plan on racing soon. I will keep you guys updated.

As for top speed, the SS/SC wins as it was made by the factory to run at 140+mph. And please remember (for safety's sake), if you disable the Speed Limiter on your car you NEED to upgrade the chassis/suspension accordingly. The SS/SC was tested for that speed (speed rated tires, downforce, etc.), the 300c was not.
Besides, most racing involves 0-60mph type runs. Top Speed face off's are few and far between (as they should be, considering how extremely dangerous it is!).

Yup.
Yes, that would be true when comparing any FWD car to RWD car.

Roll race would depend on what speed the cars started the race at (i.e., "what gear the cars were in"). In general, the 300c's broader torque band would give it an advantage in this type of race.

LoL thanks for the research man! I'm no idiot though, all my runs are on abandoned back roads around 1-2 am and we usually bring along a third car as a safety/spotter. Races rarely dip into the triple digits and if they do, there shut down shortly thereafter.
While I will admit to being suprised at those time slips, I can safely say most drivers cannot pull a 2.00 or a 2.1 60 footer out of a stock SS/SC. The conditions would have to be perfect, the tires right, and the driver awesome.
However, the 300C launch is just brake torque to 1000 and stomp it! Really no room for error. I beleive motortrend even got a 13.9 out of a brand new 05.
I guess i'm a little biased towards the 300C because of my spite for my SS/SC, but its hard to for me to appreciate the SS/SC's performance capability since I bought one brand new that never performed right for the 1 year and 3 months that I owned it.
I'll keep everyone updated though! This should be a really interesting race.
Well the first time is was overboosting, it was a disconnected boost actuator. (which was caused by an improper stage 2 installation btw) But several months later the problem came back and nobody has been able to solve the problem since.
Heres the last response i got from a GM tech and i quote "If the boost guage reads up to 20psi, then you should be okay hitting that"
Thats the very moment i decided on getting rid of it.
Now the car is on its 4th cat! Can you beleive that? Four catalytic converters on a vehicle with 26000 miles on it. GM tech problem solving FTW......
Heres the kicker, at 20psi the car still only put down 131whp! Isn't that unbeleivable!
And to the guy talking about the SRT8. Those things are nice but the markup and resale value is incredible. Your talking upper 40's brand new and upper 30's with high mileage.
I'm getting an 06 300C with 35K miles on it for $23000 US. Picking it up tomorrow. It feels like the fastest thing in the world compared to that lemon i was driving.

Well I do miss the supercharger whine, gas mileage and 100 dollar a month cheaper payment. But I don't miss the problems problems problems.
Hearing the V8 and having it throw you back in the seat all the way to redline is priceless IMHO.
But now instead of getting looks from every young person I pass, i get looks from every black person I pass! They probably laugh at me cuzz i'm just a skinny white kid listening to the Beatles.
So you got a new body style mustang GT? How does she perform? Raced any 300C's or SS/SC yet? I bet you would walk all over me lol
We should start a club!

The same can be said for the 300c. If everything's not "perfect" when driving that vehicle, then you're talking a mid 14" car.
However, the 300C launch is just brake torque to 1000 and stomp it! Really no room for error.
About the only car that has "no" room for error is an AWD car, and even then still, you'll see different people turning different times.
I beleive motortrend even got a 13.9 out of a brand new 05.
They chalked up the reason for the faster time as that first vehicle was a pre-production car and was probably running a different pcm configuration (one that didn't eventually make it into production).

What's good for the goose ...

Maybe LESS room for error, but never "NO" room for error.

At one point, Car and Driver also got a 13.9 ... but later on they could not reproduce that number.

However I will admit comparing the two vehicles isn't exactly apples to apples. Especially considering the original invoice on my SS/SC brand new was $23,000 and the original invoice on my 300C was $37,850.
Regardless, in my stock form, I'm extremely questionable about taking on a SS/SC from a roll. But I did notice that only the preproduction runs from C&D and Motortrend were in the 13's. The times from later models seem to be about 3/10's slower.
If the weather wasn't so terrible, I would make some Gtech passes. I'm interested in what that little gizmo has to say about my 300. (considering it was only 7whp off of my real dyno run)
And to PIMPSTAR SVT. Did you really get a 14.2 out of a Hemi Ram Truck with just an intake? Or do you have another Hemi vehicle?
My dad has got a Rumble Bee 4X4 and I was just looking into some ideas to show him how to make his truck a low 14 second monster.
Did you isntall the gears yourself or is that an option from the factory? What do Rumble Bee 4X4's have in the rear? What do average Hemi Ram's get in the quarter?
Sorry for all the questions, but he has had that truck forever and I want him to do something to it for once.
Tell Me you got Black..
Here's Me...

The G-Tech Will not detect the RPM of the 300C.. Sorry...

I wanted black but the closest black one to my price range was 3 grand more than the cool vanilla one. So i had to settle for white but with the temperatures around here I don't regret it.
Nooooooo! My gtech must detect it! That is going to really suck. I love that little gizmo. Maybe i can trade if for a GPS system or something.
But anyway, PIMPSTAR, that is amazing how fast those trucks can be. If I was driving my cobalt and got beat by a Hemi Ram, I would never race again! But now I wouldn't feel so bad. I'll make sure to tell my dad that an intake and racing tires will shave a half second off his Rumble Bee times.
Thats sucks about the balt, I am dealin mine in a couple weeks actually. Im grabbin a new Sti, black. There's a small chance I may keep the coby though, we'll see. Between the Sti , Mazda 3, and Coby my payments are going to be pretty gay. I might as well buy another lot...wait...m did that too... lol
Not a fan of the 300c at all, but appreciate the history of it. Took out a 300c in orlando last month and wasnt impressed. I would wait for the Pontiac G8.

But are you sure you raced a 300C? Just asking cause some people don't know that the majority of 300's are either a 2.7 V6 with 190hp or a 3.5 V6 with 250hp. The badging is extremely subtle.
I hope to have this car for a while, and maybe get a new Camaro when it comes out as a weekend car.
Or you can just look for the C emblem on the front quarter panels or the rear bumper lol.
But it is popular to debadge these cars, however many people buys these cars and replace the rims immediately. So rims arent a good guide to go buy.
If you completely stomped them, then I'm willing to wager that it wasn't a V8, but if you edged them out, then it could of easily have been one.

My car shakes a little bit between 80-100mph. Do the tires need to be balanced? (the dealership put on brand new ones before they put it on the lot for sale) I already checked the tire pressure and there fine.
It only seems to be detectable at higher speeds, all the other speeds are fine. I had a similar problem with my 2000 Camaro and it was just the wheels needing balance.
Also, how much would it run me to get a spare tire and an OEM jack from chrysler? After drving it 2 hours home, i realized it did not have one. (who thinks to check for a spare tire/jack when buying a car?!)
