TWM shifter reverse issue
TWM shifter reverse issue
I just put the shifter on. It's amazing but I have to slam it really hard to get it in reverse. I adjusted it just like they said and it goes into gears 1-5 perfectly. It's just extremely hard to get in reverse. What should I do and don't say adjust the shifter to the right lol it really can't go any more to the right. Going into 5th it slides across the plastic piece so if I adjust it over more it won't go into 5th. It's also tearing up the plastic reverse lockout pretty bad. Ofcouse Ya it is metal so it will affect the plastic but it's cutting into it pretty deep because it's so tight to get into reverse. What do I do?
Try unscrewing your shift knob a turn or two, then pull up on the reverse lockout and try to shift it into reverse. I found on mine that the knob is threaded too deep so it held the lockout down and made it hard to shift into reverse.
I became annoyed with the lockout on my TWM in the HHR as well, so I just removed it and couldn't be happier.
Used a tiny hose clamp so the boot is held up roughly .5" below the shiftknob (underneath the boot, you see nothing), looks nice, and I find myself using a "claw" to shift now.

The reverse lockout tang being located poorly has been the reason I've been griping about my TWM since I got the shifter and put it in my car. Worst mod I've done to my car and it pisses me off every time I pull out of my parking spot. Ultimately, it'll be the reason I'll get frustrated enough to take off the TWM and throw it away. I have it working, but the shifter is located so far to the right now that it's not comfortable and occasionally it's hard to hit second gear.
but in all honesty i still dont understand the whole concept of "needing/wanting" a STS.... I can shift just as freaking fast with my regular shifter and to pay the money TWM wants for their's just for a shifter "feel/look" is pretty pointless imo.. you can buy a lot of more useful things with what they want for just a shifter.. plus the metal knobs are hot as **** in summer and cold as fawk in winter.. neutral temp all year round fake leather/plastic knob is A-ok with me haha
that said, if I do anything I'll just be buying the aluminum base bushings

I had a TWM in my LT (without the reverse lockout obviously), and I it was nice; I got it used and cheap so I figured whatever might as well try it.. After having it for a while though its "mehhh whatever it is what it is, looks better than stock otherwise just mehh"

The "install error" was an ignorant comment, personally, I'd disregard it, he's clearly a positive contributor to this site.
Post has shown you're not the only one, as I myself had installed many STS's as well, including Hurst and B&M variables, *cough* a couple eBay's as well.
I feel if 1st through 5th is adjusted correctly, and shifting throughout such is effortless, reverse should not be a worry. However I'm glad I just got rid of the lockout and the shifter allowed me to do such.
I truthfully miss my stock shifter and had I known what I know now, I myself wouldn't have bothered as my other STS's have increased enjoyment and driveability. For the pricetag, TWM should be amazing. Funny though a lot of people back them and love them hence the initial purchase.
Agree, also I'll note with mine apart I ran through the gears, applied body weight and failed to see movement where solid bushing would benefit either, I tossed the saab site ones on my Cobalt and am beginning to think what little improvement may had been in my head. The rubber bushing they replace has a steel sleeve
.
Can't win.

They do have a steel sleeve, but they do have give. Of that I am quite sure. If the rubber bushings are old enough they seize to the mount stud. When trying to remove then you can see just exactly how much give. So frustrating, haha.
It sounds like you need to adjust it the opposite direction, then. Remove the top plate of the console so that you can see exactly what is happening when you try to shift to reverse. I have not seen any problems with the TWM shifter if it's adjusted correctly.
If I adjust it the other way then it won't even go over the reverse lockout lip. As of right now it goes on with a lot of force and It has to be just right. So what do I do Matt? Would adjusting the other clip do anything?
I had to have TWM send another shifter to fix that exact same problem the OP has, on a customers car. TWM did that , for sure, no problem, and the fact is, it was made wrong.
I suspect it is not an install issue.
Base bushings rocked for me.

they sent me the whole thing. The TWM stuff is very nicely made, it just doesnt always fit, and the F23 is not to my liking at all, the F35 works well enough. In this case if I recall, the ball socket was not correctly placed on the shaft, and the block would not lift enough to clear to shift, I cant remember for sure. I am with padlock to tell the truth, always have been.
