Weight reduction, and its benefits

I was wondering how much weight affects our cars? Specifically 2.4L. I'm trying to troubleshoot why the hell I'm so slow, and I'm thinking my heavy wood subwoofer box is the culprit. How much would 20-30 pounds add on to 1/4 mile times, 0-60 and so on? Any ideas?

20-30 lbs wouldnt make any noticeable difference. You are talking hundredths of a second.

200-300 could be a tenth or 2 in the 1/4 mile.

yeah i dont feel that much of a difference when I have my subs in to when I dont. They weigh about 80 lbs with the box. Dont think it should make a difference unless its like 150+ lbs or something

It alll adds up... i can feel the difference between no passenger/one passenger/two passengers easily. a 30lb sub box probly wont have a big impact but if you remove that along with, say, your trunk carpet and spare then bam u have just saved 80-100 lbs. it will make ur car take turns easier and accellerate a lil better too. buuut the real reason ur car is slow = n/a 4cyl

1)seal trunk entierely after gutting
2)fill trunk and tires with helium

a)decrease tire wear, increase mpg, increase race car.

they always say 100lbs is worth about 10 hp in a straight line. multiply that times 3 for rotating components. so 100lbs of rotational mass removed from the car would be like adding 30hp. this is why i always laugh at people with expensive aftermarket wheels that add 20lbs of rotational mass to their ride slowing it down quite considerably. run flat tires are also far heavier than non runflats.

now as far as turns go, you may notice quite a bit based on your skill level by reducing mass. I can notice a difference when there is over 20 lbs of stuff in the back seat or the trunk.

how many Miles on the car? seals could be getting worn and giving low compression, slipping clutch could fudge your acceleration and what-not..

Paul Walker recommends a wing, nos and a laptop installed into your car that should help

needz teh NAWZZZZZZZ.

i would recommend a good solid tune up. how long since you last serviced the filters/plugs/etc?

a new fuel filter, some new OEM plugs, air filter, clean MAF, and an oil change can work wonders.

racing down the track with a passenger adds maybe .2-.3 on to your times....so 20-30 pounds, or golf clubs(for me) wont make a difference...empty vs full tank of gas would make more of a difference IMO

or a bad batch of gas??

I hear taking the engine and transmission out greatly reduces weight, have you tried that?

0-60 would be pretty impressive off the side of a cliff too
