when do you shift for normal driving and drag racing?
Ive tried rev matching... I came up with the idea on my own one day just thinking about how it works, but I was never TAUGHT to rev match. Then I saw something on line about it. I try to but its abit tricky... honestly id rather wear the clutch a little, the crash my balt, because I was watching the RPM/MPH instead of the road. 4th gear is easy for me because when I just set the needle location the same then let out the cluth....
BUt say to get from 4 to 3, I have to look at my speed, I know when im going 40mph, that I then need to set my RPM to 2500 but then ive slowed down a little, and OH **** I didnt see the turn ops...
VERY SMOOOOOOOTH
When I get it right.... as far as 4 to 3 and 3 to 2, thats not so smooth.... But if I have to stop at like a light or something, I just go to N and use the brakes... Those are cheaper then clutches anyways
I did notice that hwne I let the clutch out slowly for 1-2 that it doesnt bounce as much (NOT talking about wheel hop) But doesnt that wear the clutch? I like to let out fast... but oh well.. I guess some clutch wear is inevidable.

i used to down shift, now i just coast and disengage the gear when i am about to stop...If your on a race track then yea rev matching is very important into a turn, practice heel-toeing.
here's a few tips. Do it by FEEL, not by looking at the guage. What's cheaper than replace brakes? NOT replacing brakes, because you let your engine slow you down. and yes, letting the clutch out slowly to get a smooth shift is BAD. stop doing that.

do it by feel, its not as hard as everyone makes it. do it by feel a couple times and see how it goes, if its a lil rough then keep try'n. your not going to **** up the car with a few mistakes.
p.s. Always keep your eyes on the road.

There's nothing wrong with rev-matching on the street. If you learn to do it properly, it becomes second nature, thereby reducing wear on your clutch AND brakes.
Downshifting each gear also means you're more likely to be ready to respond should you need to power out of a dangerous situation.

Rev matching a downshift becomes so second nature that you won't even realize your doing it after while . I have been driving stick for 19 years and It was how i was taught . The only time i look at the gauges is if I'm in a new car just to see where the shift points line up ..... otherwise it's sound and feel . If you feel your going to wreck your car trying to do it ...... you are thinking about it way too much .
Oh guess i should add that I learned on a 72 nova ss with 4.56's in the rear ....It was more of a necessity than convenience . You screwed it up and it would throw you into the dash or hop the rear end .... I still have my first car hehe.

its all about feel from what ive learned. my first cobalt (used 06 ss/sc) was my first stick, and i definitely beat it up a bit, but overtime youll eventually find a "feel" for shifting.
since i got my ss/tc (new back in feb 09), ive come to understand what the "feel" is your looking for. basically if you pay attention enough to how your car is reacting, without looking at any gauges, while your shifting, its pretty easy to figure out where your car ideally wants to shift.
since ive gotten a feel for my 09 balt, i never look at the gauges while shifting, i know by sound and feel where the car wants to shift. its just a matter of paying attention to it and not being ignorant and beating on the clutch.

D4u2s0t, is right. He told me how to do it when i first bought my car with under 10k on it. It has over 32k on it now, after learning how to rev match and downshift my clutch still feel stock no slippage and pulls like a beast. I may only have 2.4 but you can still screw a clutch up on anything. I rarely look at the tach anymore unless im doing fun driving.
