For you SS owners, why?
I think they're both good cars in their own respects, but when it came down to it, brand loyalty is what got me. My dad's had both GMs and Dodges, and the GMs were always the more reliable car. I also noticed that my next-door neighbor used to have a Caravan and an Intrepid, and they were both always getting fixed for something. Not to mention that a lot of the cars that I see blowing a lot of smoke out of the exhuast and other general crappiness happened to be Chrysler-made, especially the Stratus/Cirrus and Intrepid/300m. I know some of it has to do with negligence, but I've seen some pretty neglected cars in better shape than what I usually see out of a neglected Mopar. When it came down to it, it was a no-brainer.
SUMMARY: I could always make my car faster, but you can't make it more reliable.

First off it has a supercharger which was different in Sport Compact world. I liked the appearance and the options it came with stock. I also get the GM discount since my Grandfather retired from GM. Plus my family would never let me live it down.
My Dad drove his friends SRT-4 after I had already bought my Cobalt and he said he prefered the Cobalt over the SRT. I haven't had a chance to drive it yet, but we plan on swaping cars to compare.
The Cobalt also has a forged crank and forged rods. From what I have heard, the pistons and valve springs are the only internals that need replacing to safely run 600hp.

When I was looking for a new car I never even thought of the srt-4 cuz I didnt want to be seen in a neon. My 2 choices were between the mazda 3 sport and the Cobalt SS 2,4. Didnt want the S/C because I knew insurances would kill me. It was a really hard choice between the 2 but the cobalt has a more sporty feel to it. I don't know, to me the mazda 3 looks more like something you buy to get your kids to school. The accessories included for the price i.e. the sound system is amazing for a 18 000$ car. And I figured that parts for GM are going to be less expensive in the long run.
Other factors include the ecotec engine wich proven itself in the last couple of years and the possibilities that it brings, the car is only in it's 2nd year production and already you see parts for it all over ebay, hahn is getting the turbo kit out and specialty sites (like this one) are all over the place.
Also that my Initials are G M

I mean seriously, Who wants to drive a NEON!?!?!?!? Not ME! First of all I'm not much of a Dodge person, and second of all, when I see a little want-to-be ricer Neon out on the road I can't help but just laugh. Not to mention the Cobalt looks much better and I would definitely drive a GM or even Ford over a Daimler (<SP?)Chrysler anyday.
I've also considered the Mazda 6. It is a sharp looking car but it really doesn't have the power to weight I'm looking for. I don't need a 12 second monster, but a low 14 second car at least. That'll help in traffic when I need to pass and it makes passing safer since I won't have to spend as much time in the other lane.

You may want to wait around if you can for the Mazdaspeed 3. It should be a zippy little car.

also on another note...I love the fact that who knows where the aftermarket will take us in a few years with our cars..the srt4 is dead. So not much more growth in aftermarket. People bash the hell out of the cobalt because its a new platform..and is a chevy. I must say I think the #1 reason we all got this car was to prove everyone wrong and leave them with a WTF look on there face
basically i picked da cobalt cuz every1 else has srt-4, civics, evo, sti,i notice dat my cobalt has great accelaration speed and nice interior wher u can hook up neon lights....da srt4 is jus a supped up neon wit a round ugly ass spolier and the doge engines and transmissions arnt that good after a few yrs i heard

As for the speed, I've seen both run at the track, the SRT-4 has been consistently .3-.5 seconds faster then the SS.
I know the Ecotec is a great engine. But the 2.4 has been around longer. They were using it in cars bound for Mexico for a time. I've talked to more SRT-4 guys and they mod them often and the engines take it. So I'm more concerned as to how long they will hold up. The Dodges being made by Germans is a great move. They do it best. So that is not a strike against Dodge at all.
