did this tonight.
as previously reported, expect about 2-3 cups of gasoline to get on a good amount of the underbody and eventually on the ground(unless you were smart line me and got a oil pan to catch the debris in).
At 72k miles mine did not appear extremely dirty, but that is probably because I've been running premium the last 50k miles or so from Chevron or Shell. The debris that was in there however just appeared to be some fine mineral with large amounts of refined oil(thicker than fuel, still very crudeish looking).

This is just "maintenance", like changing your oil. If you wait to change it until there is a "problem" then it is too late.
There are many factors as to how often you should change it. I always did mine every 30K - 40K miles. If you have really shitty gas in your area then I would change it more often.

Just did this but know I've got a CEL. Is this most likely just because I stalled out the car from pulling the fuse? I was also considering that I may have gotten the hoses on the 2 pronged side of the filter switched, is it possible to mix these up or do they only fit on one way?

Just finally changed my fuel filter after 69000 miles...it doesn't seem to be dirty from what I can see. I've never had any problems. I fought with the single fuel line for like 30 mins trying to use the 3/8th's plastic fuel line disconnect. Then I tried the smaller 5/16th's of an inch disconnect tool and it popped right off. I used an inexpensive WIX fuel filter part #33980 from O'Reilly's. They usually have good products so I trust them enough to use their fuel filter rather than going to the dealership for one.
Only thing I may do different than most other people is that I use AMSOIL Performance Improver in my fuel tank once in a while (I have always used 93 octane or better fuel). Yes I do sell this product and I am an authorized dealer. Honestly, the first time I used it in my Stage 2 Cobalt I noticed a major difference in gas mileage. Before I put it in my fuel tank I was averaging 26/29mpg (town/hwy). The very next tank and from then on after using this product I have been getting 30/34.5 (town/highway).
Anyways even after I removed the fuel pump relay, turned on engine and let it die, I still had like a 1/2 a quart or so of fuel drain out of the lines and the old filter. No dirt or discolored fuel whatsoever. Got it all over my hands but thankfully I didn't stand right underneath the filter. I just knew there would still be fuel in the lines. At least now, next time I know to use the 5/16th's fuel line disconnect instead of the 3/8th's one that a lot of people had recommended.
