Other/Misc: How to Launch With Stock Pirellis
Nice write up, I'm still working on the launch on my auto, havn't been to the track yet but I raced a few locals for 1/2 mile and stayed head to head with a S/C Cavy, I lauched better and he closed the gap...but this winter were talking about doing a track day so I will get some times posted, anyway....
High5 - The new rep system

nitrogen actually keeps the tires cooler, which would be bad for traction...
2.1 still isnt the greatest. i got that with a passenger in the car too, stock. doesnt mean they are good for launching. the real trick is the feathering up to about 3500 rpms then flooring it once the tires are moving. ive never wheel hopped once at the track. not once.
the real trick is getting real sticky tires, new axles, and possibly strengthen the tranny, and dump the clutch at around 3-3500 rpms (whatever causes no bogging and a little spin). then youd be out of the hole like a horny teenage girl with a banana

p.s. i dont race really, never launched harder than 21-2200 rpms at the track. but thats what you have to do on the stockers...and feather...
Nice write up, but
Alright guys everyone always blames the stock tires and wheel hop on bad 60' foot times.
i went out to prove you CAN get a good launch on stock tires, and last night i managed a 2.1 60' on my crappy Pirellis.
step one-junk in the trunk some ppl think "oh that sub box is only 30lbs my spare is only so and so amount of weight" WRONG
strip the trunk.
you may not know but you prob have about 100lbs extra on the rear of your car.
GAS
be at the "low fuel point" or a little higher, you can still make trips down the track and get back to the station just fine.
Now that you have a lighted rear end, INFLATE the rear tires to 45-50PSI (i had mine at 48)
Now DEFLATE the front tires to 20-21- the trick is not to guess at this stuff get a PSI gauge from autozone for like 2 dollars or so
now on to the track-your tires have to be warm, how do you do this? water box? no. burn out? no. take 1 or 2 runs down the track as best you can to warm up the tires.
(i got a 2.3 then a 2.2 then a lower 2.2 then my 4th and 5th runs were 2.1)
Ok typing this and doing this are two completely different things but if you have a visual in your head the better you will do.
IT IS ALL ABOUT TIMING
sense you do not do a burnout you have the upper advantage of staging frist
1 light comes on-roll up-second light-your set.
timing timing timing
when the second car gets the first stage light start sllllllooowwwlly creeping the gas to about 1,300rpm his second stage light hits you want to hit 2,000RPM2-2,200RPM right as the blinking yellow goes off
and launch! DO NOT
-dump the clutch
-hold the clutch in and rev up to some ungodly RPM
YOU WANT
-to leave at the blinking yellow
-press the gas, and let of the clutch IN SYNC
THIS IS SLIPPING THE CLUTCH-its bad for it, sue me but wheel hop is worse.
your goal is to have enough power to propel you to where you have grip but also without spinning tires.
-you should leave the clutch completely by 3,000-3,200RPM
and back on it around 6000 for second gear(something i am bad at the 1-2 shift lol)
note* when i did this my frist gear i spun almost nothing.
my stock Pirellis are not new they have about 12,500 miles on them, they are not new, and trust me...if i can get a 2.1 60' anyone can lol
i hope it helps a little..i never wrote up anything before lol
if done properly the spinning in first will be just about nothing and if you can shift into second with out spinning your run will be gold.

Just thought you might want to know that.
W/street tires most tracks insist you drive around the water box, so you don't lug the water that gets stuck in your tire tread up to the starting line. It's also a good idea to back up short of the starting line, and just haze your tires, with street tires, to warm them a little bit and hopefully get rid of little rocks that may have stuck in the tire tread.
Otherwise very good info. Thanks.
Doc
nice how to, but like others have said it's considered rude to stage early. The gentlemen at the track were kind enough to let me know since I was a noob. Some guys get really ticked off about that. lol
