Other/Misc: HOW-TO: Mount a camera in your car.
HOW-TO: Mount a camera in your car.
Okay, the basic concept is simple... you want to record yourself driving around, but don't want to either ruin anything, or have a crappy video. Well, here's how you do it on the cheap.
Step one. Get a tripod.
(no photo avail. of me at the store)
Step Two. Put it in the backseat.
The trick here is to have the legs at different lengths. using the rear floor to support two of the feet and the rear seat for the third is the best method. the more adjustable the tripod, the easier this is going to be.

back leg

Step Three. Strap it in. the nice part about the cobalt is that it has package hooks in the seat and the underside of the front seats has a few nice spots you can hook on.
in seat hook

under seat

Thats it. doesn't take much else and you should be ready to rock and roll.

i'm not saying that you have to do it, i'm just saying that it works, it's cheap and it doesn't damage/modify anything.
Unfortunately I want to record at the track and the course I go to the camera must be mounted to either a headrest or a roll cage and strapped down, so that wouldn't work. Not to mention in the event of an accident, those bungie cords aren't going to do much.

oh god no, if you're on a race track, bolt that bitch in place. just where i park, leaving a camera in view... bad idea.

have you found one that's a reasonable price? when i looked at them i was looking at well over $300 for the mount and camera. this was just something i came up with using **** i had laying around.
plus, i wanted that fun in-car cop show view.
I don't want to take away from this post because it does provide a decent solution BUT I may have a better one. I did this in my VW, if you take a peice of aluminum box tubing, cut it in half and clamp it together then drill holes directly between the two peices that are far enough apart as your headrest posts, you can then clamp that peice onto your head rest. At that point, all you'd need is a mount for the camera. It took me about 1 hour tops to complete the project. I'll have to find a picture for y'all.
All I did was took apart a old tripod, the connector where the video camera actualy clamps too. and installed that right behind the rear seats, so you saw between the front seats, and out the windshield.
It helps because you can 1. See the road, 2. See the driver and what all he does, 3. see the guages (speedo, tach, etc.) see him shift, e-brake, and all.
