Drivetrain: How to: Reattach cable link to shifter
How to: Reattach cable link to shifter
I was making a pull from 2nd gear and i pushed it into 3rd gear really hard! i heard a pop noise and i was stuck in 2nd gear because i had a dislodged the shift cable ball link from my shifter. so i was forced to drive home in 2nd gear. If this happens to you hopefully this will help you put it back on
you need:
T15 Torx driver
rubber mallet

the first thing you are going to do is remove the shift boot. then you are going to remove the console around the hand brake, all you do is lift up on them and they will unsnap off. and then remove the console that covers the shift controls. careful when you lift this piece off because the ac outlet is connected (circled in yellow) simply squeeze the latches and remove.

this is what you see when you remove the consoles. now take your T15 driver and remove the (4) screws (circled in yellow)and remove the lid. on the lift the shift rod will be connected to another link for the tension link cable. simply pull the shifter to the right and remove it. after that is off just pull up on shifter and it will come completely out. the shift cable is has a black arrow pointed to it. heres a pic of what it should look like when removed (not my pic. and it wont have the shift cable link attached to it)

this is what it should look like after the lid is removed. notice that the shift cable link (circled in yellow) is still on the cable. mine was completely off and on the bottom of that pit.

take the shift cable link and place it on something sturdy. i just used the floor of my car. take your shifter and place the end ball of it on top of of the link. now take the Rubber Mallet and with one quick hit, it will pop back in!!! your almost done!

now take the the completed assembly you just did and put it back in the shift hole. Just follow the black arrows. as your putting it in the hole, lift up the shift cable and put it in the link's cable hole as your putting it. once in, on the cable link, squeeze and snap the cable lock closed. ( its the white gray part on the link ) now check your shifts to make sure they are how you had them before. unsnap the cable lock to make adjustments. i put mine all the way in and it was perfect.... AND THAT'S IT! YOUR DONE! now just put everything back in how you installed it!

i want to thank myself for breaking this and forcing myself to make a how to on this

yes it does they all do. you have to pull up on the top part of the shift boot base and it will just pop out. you then have to twist the part at the base of the shift ***. thats about it.
see that white clip on the cable...i busted one of mine while doing an sts install on my ls...anyone know where to get one to replace it. dealer wants me to replace the whole thing for 200$
two actually hahahaha. that is what is on there now...but now its uber loose...so im going to take 06's advised and go to the junkyard...i think im just going to get the whole shift assembly though lol
i got stuck in second too lol!!!
i was about 30 miles from home and it was all highway driving :P
so here i am almost redlining the damn car, exhaust screamin down the highway doin 55-60, and a cop pulled me over for excessive revving? i didnt even know that was.. a law?
and i told him it was stuck in 2nd and on my way home then he laughed at me and told me good luck...(dick)
So, is the yellow threaded end of the shifter cable supposed to be attached securely to the back of the black clip??
Mine is slipping, it goes into gear but the gray clips slip while in gear. Lots of north-south play.
