How-to: Remove 05-06 2.2L Valve Cover

I looked for one of these when I went to swap in my painted valve cover, so I made one.

Step 1: Remove the oil cap and riser, shown already removed in the photo. Photo also shows the location of 10x 10mm bolts which you will need to remove as well, but skip the removal of the 10 bolts for now, leave that as the very final step.

Step 2: Remove the grey, plastic retainer(not shown in image) on the wire harness attached to the coil pack...and then undo the harness. There is also a 10mm bolt on the side of the valve cover that must be removed. The next photo shows a 10mm wrench attached to the bolt to give you an idea of where it is.

Step 3: Once that 10mm bolt is removed, you can slide off the metal bracket that is attached to it. Once off the bolt, just move it back out of the way as shown below.

Step 4: Still working with the same area. Next, you need to remove the stud that you just took the 10mm bolt off of. I had to use a pair of vice grips to break the torque on it...yours may or may not be as tight. Once the stud is removed, remove the ground wire that is attached below it and set it aside.

Step 5: Real easy step. Circled in red...there is a plastic retainer clip that is holding the shown wire loom for the MAF onto the valve cover...just pull it out of the mounting hole it is in.

Step 6: Next, remove the 4 10mm bolts holding the coil pack onto cover. Once they are removed you can pull straight up on the coil pack to remove it. It will be snug, don't be afraid to pull on it. Set it aside.

Step 7: Remove the breather hose that comes from your intake.

Step 8: This step I forgot to photograph. WHOOPS! It's pretty simple. Requires the removal of 4 10mm bolts that are underneath the coil pack once its removed. I took a picture of my new valve cover to show where the 4 bolts are.

Step 9: Go back to those 10 bolts from step 1 and remove them.

Step 10: Once all the bolts are removed, lift the valve cover up and off of the motor. You will then be greeted by this:

Step 11: Put your new cover on and reverse these steps to reinstall the cover.
