okay i finally got the boot down... there is four plastic clips. i tried putting pennies in each one to hold them open but the knob will not pull off? is the knob also held on by glue?? i'm scared that if i pull really hard i'm going to break something. When the knob pulls off will the end of the shifter be round or a square???

Oh my god, it really isn't this hard! Yes there are four clips holding the stock know on. If you use a srewdriver and pull one out and hold it with you finger and then work on another one it will pull off, if not use something to hold it out or break them off if you don't plan on using the stock know anymore. I think some of you are trying to make this way to hard! IT ISN'T!!!!!

Bought a B&M. I just cut it off. I tried everything and couldn't get it off! Some most not be on a good as others. I just pulled the entire assembly out, put in my band saw and i cut the knob off, then salvaged the oem parts needed for the new shifter. it was a pain in the as*.

Shifter knob
I had no problem getting my shifter knob off as per instructions on this thread. Can anyone suggest a good replacement shifter knob? My buddy gave me one but it did not fit well as it was meant for a shaft that was threaded but the colbalt one isn't, and it isn't completely round either. Just wondering what kind you guys might have bought. Thanks.

I used on extra person, and 4 flathead screwdrivers. Once All the clips were held out, yank. And It's out. Now my only problem is that the new shift knob and the top of the boot have no way of connecting, so it is just loose.
What has someone else done to get that top of the boot part secure to an aftermarket shift knob? Maybe a rubber washer?

replacing the shift knob is easy breezy, it took 15 minutes, i used a Bell (brand name) shift knob that used allen screws to hold itself to the rod. i bought it at checker for 15 dollars. the boot will come down!!! just you just need to line it up right, once it is down the tabs are very aparent, i slid a screw driver under each tab and pop! off came the knob. I plan on doing an illustrated write up for most common DIY mods so stay tuned!!! how many people would be interested in a book with how to's with pics and illustrations?

On my ss/sc to remove the shift knob when i got my b&m, i had to put the stock shifter upside down in vice grips, slide a flat head screw driver in the knob head then WHACK it poped off with one hit....thats how har it was to get off....GM presses on everything. Hope that helps at all...

My SS/SC knob came loose then it popped off. it is a press on knob. I popped it back on with a slight change in position (less than 1 degree) and it has stayed on. then the **** pattern plate on top broke off. GM is getting me a new knob.
so how would a ss/sc owner get the knob off? well carefully a slide hammer under the knob. the reverse lockout is a hallow with a thin spring that has a foam tube wrapped around it.

I removed mine with hopes of replacing it (too bad the replacement was ****) and had to tug so damn hard on the thing that it whacked me in the mouth and I cut up my lip. Whomever designed it really needs to learn what a threaded rod is because it was just unnecessary. Eventually I'm going to pull it off again and put it back on with something better. Unfortunately, I found most of the shift knob tutorials here to be unhelpful and really was only helped by a few of those "How to replace the whole shifter" tutorials, that came with photos. I did need to get a screw driver underneath the knob but it was more hassle than it was worth if you ask me.

It is Do-Able
So i picked up my new whip about 2 weeks ago. 06 ss 2.0L. first thing i did was went and got myself a Genuine Momo shiter knob as i dont like the stock ones one bit. The plastic peice you all are talking about to allow reverse is easily removable. all the peice does it make it so that the "lever" for reverse hits the side of the console when not pulled up. you can simply slide it off like others said in previous posts. this will NOT affect anything to do with your tranny and switchin of gears. i pulled the stock one off and slid my Momo on no problem. and ya, i dont like the trigger systems either unless your a retard. lol, i guess its preference, i find it completely pointless though so an experienced driver.

Really just take off the cap to the shift knob, take out the screw in the middle, hop in your backseat and pull as if you are going to die if u cant get it off, it should pop right off, but the springs and plastic inserts might go flying, but...........its easily removable. then do what u gotta do to either keep the trigger system if u want it or get rid of it, some knobs arent compatible with it. Depends on how deep the knob sits on the shift shaft. mine wouldnt go back on properly and i didnt want a half assed job so i just removed it. now its like any other manual ive ever owned.
