Electrical: How to replace your power steering motor
hey i have been having this problem with my car for quite some time as well... i still have my warranty should i just have them do it or should i just go get one myself? i don't have too much money tho so it may have to wait a bit?
Blue06, did you buy it from a Chevy/Pontiac dealer? Do you have part number/pricing info?
G11, if your car is still covered by warranty then I would definitely have the dealer do it.

I would take it in if it's under warranty. Why pay the $189 for the part if it's under warranty. It's easy to do but I would just have them do it since it's under warranty

Awesome, that would be great if you could get me that info tonight. I have a website that I hosted my how-to on for people not on CSS ( http://www.cobaltpowersteering.webs.com/ ) and this would be great information to add to it.
Why are people reading this or still doing it on their own. You know there was a national recall on this issue for all cobalts, so just take it to any chevy dealer and tell them your power steering motor is going bad and they have to replace it.
I agree with HyperMuffin. This was written before there was a recall. I would have added a disclaimer to the original post informing them of the recall but I can't edit it since it is so old.
Please contact your nearest GM dealer for recall information relating to the power steering system. Feel free to continue to use this guide as information on how to remove your steering column for other purposes.

Well depending on how many miles you have on your car. Issues usually start to occur around 40-50k miles. Why spend money though on the HHR motor when you can just use the one you have until it goes bad and then get a new one free.

cuz i could get the hhr motor cheap from a wrecked car and its a better motor, being brushless compared to the cobalt motor
Digging up an old thread again, 127k on my car, recall was never repaired when I got it, over the weekend the motor started giving me problems at idle, went to go pull out of a parking spot and had no power steering so I went in this morning for the recall. Part# 19257875 is what they installed, "motor kit 6.605".
Just curious though, does anyone know if they are replacing them with just new brushed motors or are they using newer style brushless units to decrease the rate of failure on these?

Hello,
I tried this step by step. After the install my car will not turn on (2006 Chevy Cobalt SS 2.0) it was replaced with a used part. The part came off a Saturn, I took off the module from my old steering pump and plugged it to my car and it turns on but as soon as I connected the Saturn one the security light comes up and wont allow my car to turn on.
