How To: Wire Your Fans To A Switch!

Many threads like this have been popping up lately and i am getting sick of telling people when they pop up. So here is a How-To for the whole forum.
How hard is this, Not Very hard. My direction might be off a little i am doing this from memory.

STEP 1:
Disconnect Your Battery, if you would like to.

STEP 2:
Unwrap the wire loom from the fan.
This will show 3 wires.
One being Purple, which is LOW fan speed
One being Blue, which is HIGH fan speed.
One being White, which is the ground.

STEP 3:
Select which wire you want to use for your fan speed. Run this to POWER. I used the jumper post (thats what i call it) right by the fuse box.

STEP 4: Then run it to your switch of choice. I am pretty sure that is all i did. I left the ground alone because it is already ground.

Its to override the fan relay to allow you to run the fans at will if you need to. That way you can run the fans whenver you wouldn't normally have them on for things like track days or running from the 5-0.

Now, this will work with the car off also, correct? I have been thinking about doing this so when I am in the staging lanes at the strip I can run the fans to evacuate the hot air from the engine bay.

Looking at the write up, he has it wired to the battery post directly, so this will remain running as long as the switch is ON.

I was just clarifying since the post in the engine bay is not the battery itself. I was not sure if the car turned off power to that terminal when the ignition was shut off or not. Thanks for clarifying though!

If you use a single pole double throw with a center off switch you can wire one way to factory wiring and the other to battery positive. That way if the switch is one way the computer operates the fan like it's supposed to and then if you want it on or off all the time you can switch it to that.

like this one from radioshack

Good idea! I was trying to think of how to do that, but the furthest I got was thinking how i could run a switch like that and have control of low and high speeds.

So, I have this thought out a bit better. I am going to splice in before the original relay, so I can trip the relay manually. This will allow 2 things, first, it will be more reliable, since I will not be running power directly to the fan, and second, it will allow the fans to come on automatically.

Wouldn't this possibly burn up something if you had the switch on and the relay on the car came on?

Yeah this is an epic f*cking how to. No fuse, hot side controlled, direct power, awesome, just asking for people to A:kill their battery, B: burn their car to the ground.
