Chicago People - Help!
Chicago People - Help!
So here's the deal.
I'm moving to Chicago in May. The Cobalt is coming along this time... heh.
So since I've been living in Iowa, I already have some dedicated snow tires and rims.
I need to get some new summer tires for this year, since the stock Pirellis are about dead.
I'm actually going to be living in Chicago Chicago, so I will be able to use public transport when the weather is bad, so I probably won't be driving the Cobalt all that much in bad weather, if at all... I'm planning on living in Uptown, and hope to work in Lincoln Park, so just taking the red line won't be that bad.
I'm also concerned about the issues of having snow tires... and storage of them/summer tires... and finding a place to switch them out.... since I'm going to be living in an apartment.
Ok. So backstory done, question time.
I'm debating selling the snow tires (anyone interested? Been used two years...) and just getting some good all-season tires on the stock rims, and then just planning on taking the train if it's actually snowing. Which I would probably do more even if I had snow tires.
Would this be a good plan? Or should I stick with summer tires and snow tires?

I have Pirelli P6's on my Cobalt, and I do well in the winter. Its about time I get new tires, since they are wearing thin on the tread size, but I still do well in the winter. I plan on getting summer and winter tires and rims in the future tho. It all comes down to preference, I have gotten through four years now with just four season tires, so it shouldnt be much of a problem for you. Public transportation is an option, but compared to driving it actually takes me about 30-40 minutes longer to take public transportation over driving to my destination.
I'm looking at living in Uptown, and hope to be working in Lincoln Park... So it really won't be that bad to hop on the red line and be there.
I'm just concerned about storing the tires in the off-season, and also getting them switched out.
Blah. Add another thing to the list of moving trouble.

I'd say just get a set of all seaons on the stock rims. That's what I do. Especailly with you being right off the redine, you should rarely have to drive as it is.
Plus, it will save you the hassle of trying to find somewhere to swap the wheels for winter / summer.

I've been off and on about snow tires and rims for the 'balt... Last year it was garaged, this year we got all seasons, worked pretty good in town but not so well out on the country roads.....We're debating the whole winter tire thing for next year.....
If you wanna sell give me a shout I may be interested.....

I can't imagine needing to drive all that much in bad weather, especially since I'm so close to the red line.
So I'm probably going to be getting some good all seasons, and then selling the winter tires.
