Headlight/tailight tinting laws fro VA?

Does anyone know what the VA law is concerning tinting your headlights/tailights? I'm looking to get the DecalFX pre-cut headlight/tailight film kit in smoke gray for my SS. Its pretty damn dark, lol. But will cops hassle me for it and will it = tickets?

www.decalfx.com to check it out. I think its like $75 for both the headlights and tailights. Good thing is, its removable!

Um, "search is NOT friend" when you do your posting from a sidekick 2 working underground in DC. Low service = slow, and I can't open multiple pages at once. That's why I asked. Plus, I'm sure other people have the same question since I don't see much about this topic, so it benefits others too.

oh my apologies... reading > me.

as far as i know, nationwide headlight tint is not allowed thats why all that stuff is for "off road use only"

tail lights, if the bulb is still visible when on during the day, then you should normally be ok.

All tinting of lights in VA is illegal, no matter how light you go. This goes for blackout kits, that spray stuff, and vinyls. Rear light assemblies must maintain there reflextive state to be seen when the vehicle is parked or the lights are not on. Any modification to headlights and tails void the DOT certification required by VA law, and will get you stopped quickly.

it depends on who you know as well
a friend, a cop in suffolk, told me as long as the light is visible at 300 feet it can be considered legal....honestly, lights are the least on his priority list of things to stop a person for...if the car has tinted lights and it makes for a hazardous situation, he'll do it but otherwise its an add-on or fix-it ticket. Now, if your a dick when he stops you, he'll look for anything and everything he can to make your life hell just about every cop I know has the same attitude...a little food for thought

(Code 1950, § 46-311; 1958, c. 541, § 46.1-308; 1960, c. 125; 1968, c. 172; 1970, c. 26; 1984, c. 426; 1989, c. 727.)

§ 46.2-1003. Illegal use of defective or unsafe equipment.

It shall be unlawful for any person to use or have as equipment on a motor vehicle operated on a highway any device or equipment mentioned in § 46.2-1002 which is defective or in unsafe condition.

(1960, c. 125, § 46.1-308.1; 1989, c. 727.)

Doc, being able to see the light from 500 feet is a seperate code reference light requirements.

§ 46.2-1013. Tail lights.

Every motor vehicle and every trailer or semitrailer being drawn at the end of one or more other vehicles shall carry at the rear two red lights plainly visible in clear weather from a distance of 500 feet to the rear of such vehicle. Such tail lights shall be constructed and so mounted in their relation to the rear license plate as to illuminate the license plate with a white light so that the same may be read from a distance of 50 feet to the rear of such vehicle. Alternatively, a separate white light shall be so mounted as to illuminate the rear license plate from a distance of 50 feet to the rear of such vehicle. Any such tail lights or special white light shall be of a type approved by the Superintendent.

In any instance where the tail light is to be installed on a boat trailer and the boat extends beyond the end of the trailer or to the end of the trailer, an approved portable light assembly or assemblies may be attached to the exposed rear of the boat, provided such installation complies with the visibility requirements of this section. The provisions of this section shall not apply to motorcycles.

(Code 1950, § 46-267; 1952, c. 652; 1958, c. 541, § 46.1-262; 1964, c. 16; 1989, c. 727; 2003, c. 964.)

The code I mentioned above is what you will get charged with for smoked lights, as well as many other mods. There is always another charge out there to get pinged with.

Well, guys, there is a way around it. Get a spare set of lights, have one regular and one tinted.
