Exclamation MI wheels & tires for winter

Is it a terrible idea to buy new wheels right before entering a Michigan winter? I mean, if I want to run the same wheels in the summer and I am regularly in the Detroit area, are my wheels going to be ruined by winter's end? haha

ALSO, what's the defacto snow tire to run in the lower mitten?

FYI - I am on the hunt for some SS/TC wheels, if you have a set up for sale let me know.

Thanks.

Like anything really, protect the wheels properly with a sealant, wash often and you should be fine.

I don't think all seasons should be legal in the winter. Using a winter tire vs all season in snow is the difference between night and day. My tc is stock and I couldn't imagine having all seasons on right now.

Grew up in southern michigan mate, don't make assumptions. It doesnt snow enough often enough in southern and eastern michigan to merit spending that amount of money.

All depends on the all season, some are more summer tire like and some are more winter tire like. If you slow down on all seasons you'll be fine

Where I live you'd be crazy not to run Winters. Especially on a 18" wheel. The short, stiff sidewall combined with cold rubber designed for warm temps would suck.

Tall and narrow tires are best. I ran wheels through two winters before. Ruined the aluminum. Though that probably was contributed to cheap and thin clear coat.

If you never wash your wheels it will destroy unprotected aluminum, salt likes aluminum to much lol

Manitoba is no where close to Detroit even weather wise.

I'm not talking amount of snow. I'm talking about how cold it gets. All Seasons are crap in the cold. They're too hard.

Again, my statement of weather holds true. Its average low around 15 to 20F, and I can assume up north of North Dakota the temps are more in the -15 to -20F or lower, thats a pretty good difference. All seasons are fine for even the once an a while below 0F, not like you'll be racing that time of year anyways

Actually Winter tires are recommended at 7 Celsius or 44 Fahrenheit. Now mix a cold hard tire with some ice and you're asking for trouble.

I'd way sooner run a dedicated Summer and Winter instead of a shitty All Season that doesn't excel at anything. Plus your tires will last longer and that "extra" cost of buying a second set works itself out.
