Question Michigan road course any one?

IM looking for a road course in Mi. Iv been to one and called a few others and they all say I have to get a license from them and I have to take classes to get the license or they will not let me run.
Now this is not cheap. And on top of that there asking for like 100-200 for a day of test and tune running.

I just dont have that kind of cash to get a license or the time.

Any one know where I can road racing without having to go threw all that crap?

I just want to have some fun and run on a track for the day.

The only Michigan road course I can think of is the Gingerman, but I don't know how they run things over there, or if you already inquired there about all of that. Looks like a sweet track, tho.

Call them up and ask them questions.

Right now, I'm not gonna call and bug places cause I don't even have an SRT-4 just yet but I'm just doing research and finding out what is available and things of that nature.

Lightbulb Waterford Hills.......

is a race track here near Pontiac. It's an SCCA - sanctioned track (I think) so they might have the same issues for a license. They do have 'track days' so you can run around and try your wheels out, but that's only about 2 x a year. Check out their website too.

You got Gingerman, Grattan and Waterford Hills Raceways. Gingerman is in the west side just north of Kalamazoo. Grattan is also on the west side north of Grand Rapids. Waterford hills is in Waterford just north of Pontiac. Both Grattan and Gingerman are SCCA affiliated courses Waterford is not. Waterford has its own club. I have run on all three tracks in the past few years. The best way to get on them is at an open track or HPDE. These events will run you anywhere from $120-300.

The best event I went to at Gingerman was an HPDE hosted the MWSCC. It cost $130 and I got about 20 or so laps in.

A real good event at Waterford is an open track day hosted by the Windsor SportsCar Association, cost $130. I did that event last summer and only 13 cars showed up! I did some 35 laps. I had to keep stopping to let my brakes cool, also went through 2 wheel bearings. Most of the time there were only a few cars on course. The Corvette Club events at Waterford are also real good.

Check the myautoevents link in my sig. You may not find much info on events in Michigan now, but do some searching around springtime and throughout the summer and you'll find a ton of events.

If you wanna do club racing you will need a license and a roll cage.

And I do want to put a cage in the car. Just a 6 point with a harness bar but I want a bolt in so I can remove it if need. But I have not found one for the car yet.
And I was told it would be like 700 to have on made. I bout one for my mustang for like 350 a few years back and am not going to pay 2 times that for a smaller simpler cage.

Check out the midwest council and the scca. Also some local clubs provide track days. One of the best things you can do is start autoxing in your area. Some of the guys that run at the tracks will go there for practice and fun. I attend both types of racing myself. Getting involved is not as hard as you might think. We will be attending a lot of events in the michigan, illinois, minnisota and wisconsin areas this summer. I will try and keep you guys informed of what ones are comming up. We also have one of the longest autox courses in the U.S.. We have a very large runway to use in the upper peninsula and sometimes our courses can be between 1.5 and 2 miles long depending on how it gets setup. So if you feel like taking a stride up into yooper country let us know. Ohh midohio shouldnt be too far from some of you guys either.

Mid-ohio is the only track that I cant seem to get on with my car. I can't find any clubs that to events there. The only way is to go to the mid-ohio school and use one of thier RSX's

There is no one around me doing auto-X or road racing. Thats my problem. I live in a small town and there isnt much around here.

Im still looking for a track close to me that will just let me run for some fun.

But so far the only one I have found is almost 1,300 miles away. Thats just to far.

www.scca.com

There should be a local region section somewhere on the site.

Gratan is just north of Ionia, about a half hour from downtown Grand Rapids. I plan on doing a track day there thiss summer. Gingerman is within an hour drive south of you.

Check out the Western Michigan SCCA. I went to one of thier auto-x last year at Gratan. I am not familiar with thier local venue's. I do know they hald events in Kalamazoo and would asume they hold events in Grand Rapids considering it is a major metro area.

Also check out Wormtech.com. There are a ton of regional auto-xer's there.

I've done Gingerman at least a half dozen times, including a winter rally there in the snow.
Great track, lots of run off (if you need that), great combination of corners.... the straights are short. I can try to remember to keep you in mind next time I hear of something up there.....
Let's do a Balt/Ion track day.... they are really nice there, my buddy knows the owner.
We could probably get the track to ourselves for about $125 each w/ about 15-20 cars for the whole day.... then we could run the cars in both directions (for even tire wear).... and we'd get tons of track time! Oh the downside is we'd probably need to do it on a weekday to make it affordable.

I'd be happy to call them 1st week of 2007, get the details and help coordinate an event!

Let's make our own event for spring 2007
