thats kind of an issue right now. i tore it down and the block, crank, and one rod and piston are junk. valves all got tweaked, so the guides have hairline cracks in them, but im pretty sure i can just cut them down slightly and remove the cracks. done it on v8 heads lots of times. head looks good other than that. i really just need a bottom end, but everything within 500 miles of here is $1200 and up, and i cant find a short block at all. im thinking of trying a 2.2 bottom end, but i know the reluctor wheel and crank position sensor are different. wondering if i could change the reluctor and relocate the crank trigger somehow.

FYI valve guides are cheap on ZZP for Ecotec. I would stick with LSJ bottom end because the reluctor wheel like you said. You would have to swap a lot of stuff to make the 2.2 crank work. That said you CAN use a 2.2 block with LSJ crank, rods, and pistons you just lose your oil cooler and piston oil squirters. If you plan on keeping the car for a while and want it reliable I would honestly just try to find a long block or short block and fix your head.
