After some more driving i've come to the conclusion I need to make the ride smoother. Anyway I can keep the height but get a smoother ride? Train tracks and pot holes are unbearable. I met up with some people from Chicagoland Ecotecs and they said my coil springs were shot.

Time to move to a different thread?

So I took a picture of my front left coil spring.

Not good, I guess this is what happens when the coils are said to be binding.
I met someone last night willing to sell me a set of 4 coil springs (eibach sportlines) used for $100.00
I think he said they were only used for 4-5 months.

Any advice?

Can I get access to see the rear springs without jacking or putting the car up?

I wouldn't buy sport lines. Others have had them break. I love my YYZ springs, but it doesn't lower the car much. My SSC springs were great and the car sat pretty low, maybe not as low as you are now. The black wheels make it hard for me to tell where the gap is at. I think the SSC springs are 220 new from ZZP

Clearer picture

This picture should make the gap a bit easier to see.

When I replace the coil springs, will I also need to replace front struts and the rear shocks?

technically no, your stock shocks/struts will be fine as long as they are not leaking.

Your springs looks shot, that would explain why your ride handles so stiff. You can replace them quite easily with little knowledge of mechanic and help from a friend, you will also need a special spring compression tool. You don't need to replace the front struts and the rear shocks when changing the springs. I would suggest SSC springs, I installed mine two weeks ago and I absolutely love them. Here's a link to the review I made about them.

Thanks

I appreciate all this feedback guys!
I will look to order some SSC springs unless anyone else has some other recommendations.
I spoke with someone last Thursday and they were recommending 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt SS Applications || H&R Special Springs, LP

Is there an easy way to check my shocks and struts while I'm replacing the springs to make sure they are not kaput?

I was on the other thread and riceburner complained about his car riding like crap after his struts took one.

Look for any signs of oil leakage.

Got my car on a lift so I could take some photos.
My car will definitely fail emissions in Illinois?

That looks like an electric exhaust cutout

IL doesn't do visual inspections.

As long as you don't have a CEL, and the OBDII comes back with everything ok, you're good to go.

Went to a mechanic the other day and his computer said that the catalytic converter and 02 sensors were not installed. He said it would fail their test.

pictures show that the o2 sensors are installed. Are you throwing any codes? If not, you will pass inspection. Just go to a shady place.

He said that this ODBII computer showed that they were not installed. He said something about the tests that are supposed to be run are not completing indicating something bad....

The codes you're throwing now are possibly not letting the car do it's system checks for the o2 sensors.
That misfire would probably have something to do with it.
