New member. 09 SS/TC Sedan

So I just bought my brother's 2009 Cobalt SS/TC sedan that's been sitting at his house for a couple of years. He hit a deer with it, smashed the hood, RF fender, headlights, grill, bumper, and intercooler. He "bypassed" the intercooler for a bit so he could drive it without leaking too much boost. Long story short, I bought it from him, replaced a bunch of brake parts, power steering rack, tires, and slowly getting the mechanical side of things back in working order.

So far I've ordered a replacement aftermarket intercooler and some of the piping. I currently am dealing with the P0014 code. Replaced the solenoid, code comes back after 2nd key cycle after clearing the code. I'm thinking I need to change the oil again (just did ~300 miles ago but with cheap conventional oil).

It's a beat up SS, but it'll be a good daily driver while my mom is driving my A3 TDI and it'll be a fun little car once I get all the bugs worked out of it again.

This forum has been a big help so far with some minor stuff I've been messing around with on it.

I'll post some pictures when I have some free time. Though, it's not much to look at without a bumper on it and smashed hood and fender.

Welcome. Oil change to a synthetic might fix that code issue - I'm not as familiar with the 08-10 SS's and their quirks, but I know most VTEC/VVT-type systems rely on oil pressure and the "wrong" oil can affect its operation.

What year is your A3? Anything done to it? I had a '14 Jetta TDI with a Kerma tune - definitely made the car 100x's more fun to drive.

I changed the oil to Mobil 1 synthetic last night. Cleared code and by the second time I started and drove about half a mile the code was back. I’m still waiting for the intercooler and piping to come in. I’m hoping not getting the correct boost is what is causing my P0014 code.

my Audi is a 2013. All stock. It’s a great little car. I had never heard of Kerma Tine before you mentioned them. I looked into them last night and like the idea of not deleting the emissions, only for the sake of up front cost. I’ll definitely be getting one of their tuners in the future.

I thought my post saved previously but I guess not.

Audi is a 2013 that is all stock. I’d never heard of Kerma before and checked them out. I’ll definitely be getting my hands on their tune later!

I did change the oil last night with Mobil 1 5w30 full synthetic. The code still comes back. I’m wondering if the slight boost leak and improper boost could be the culprit. The intercooler should arrive today and the piping tomorrow and I’ll test that theory. Currently bypassed the intercooler due to a fluffy resident inside the RH end tank on the stock intercooler. (Brother hit a raccoon and then later a deer)

Tried replying a few days ago, but it doesn't seem to work.

So I've changed the oil to Mobil 1 5w30 synthetic. I used a Matco scan tool to command the solenoid on and with it out and KOEO (key on engine off). I could get the solenoid to open and close several times then it stopped after I moved the solenoid. I fidgetted with the plug and got it to work again. So the next day I bought a new pigtail and changed it. Same problem. 2nd key cycle after clearing the code and the CEL returns. I'm stumped.

I did end up getting a new intercooler from Modern Performance and the hot side charge pipes from ZZP for it and replaced those as well. After getting that all hooked up and test driving, I was getting misfires on cylinders 1 and 3. So I swapped coil 1 and 2 and went to swap 3 with 4 when I noticed the spark plug tube on 3 was full of water almost covering the entire plug. I soaked up as much as I could and left those 2 coils in their original spots. On my way to work the next morning, I got a CEL for cylinder 2 misfire: bad coil. My local NAPA had the ACDelco iridium plugs in stock and one coil on plug boot, so I bought that for a lot cheaper than a coil and tried replacing that first since it's serviceable. My misfires were all gone and had full boost and full power! But the damn P0014 code still remains :'(

On a better note, I did not know about Kerma until you mentioned them. I checked them out and definitely want to invest in one of their programmers for my Audi. It's a 2013 (pre-AdBlue/DEF/whatever you want to call the fluid). Nothing too fancy, and bone stock, but she's reliable. I'm sure after tuning she'll be a lot more fun to drive!

I also bought the credits for HPTuners for my car since my brother has the MVPI2. I also found a guy on the HPTuners forum that had a tune file for the stock 2.5 bar maps. I went through all the steps and adjustments to tune my car with his parameters and had a lot more noticeable bottom end as well as throttle response and boost (around 18psi first pull in 2nd). I know, I shouldn't be messing with tuning with a CEL and mechanical/electrical issue at hand. I couldn't help it. If it breaks something I'll fix it and have no one to blame but myself.

After that though, it lost all power and would not boost. Cycled the key and the boost returned to normal. No CEL, no misfires, nothing. Not sure what's going on with that yet.

Sorry for the long post, but it's been an interesting time getting this car back to driving and reliable. It has been driving fine for me without leaving me broken down or stranded. I just need it to pass emissions inspection here in NY soon!

Weird. Like I said before, I'm not as familiar with 08-10 quirks. There's a couple people on there that are; hopefully they can chime in.

I still have my KermaTDI programmer. Might be worth checking into whether or not it could be transferred. Only a couple VW/Audi tuning companies allow for transferring of tunes; I can't remember if they'll allow it or not.

If it sat for a long time the oil passages may still be gunked up. You could always try getting the engine warm, then adding a little Seafoam to the oil and let it idle a few minutes, then change oil again.

From what I've seen browsing around here though, most replace both solenoids at the same time and it seems to solve their issue. Don't exactly know why as I personally haven't had that code, but that seems the general consensus.

I replaced both solenoids @ ~105k when I redid the entire timing set on mine, I know ZZP sells the pair for $50, but I believe they're sold out currently.

Got same situation with P0014 exhaust solenoid goes wrong. It looks like yours new one is wrong or cable connection. After replacement everything starts to be fine from the first start. Error not come back.

Maybe wrong solenoid. Does it got black connector like on pic?
