Cop Problems

Well today I was leaving my school parking lot and as I pass one of the aisles of parking spots, a police car is there waiting and pulls out behind me. I drive all the way from my school to my neighborhood (about 2 miles) and the cop decides to pull me over. I'm thinking to myself, "I didn't do anything wrong". He comes up to my car and tells me to turn the car off and that he needs to "talk to me". We do the hole licesnce and registration thing and then he says to me, "I don't like your exhaust. It is too loud. Why is it that loud?" I'm like, "Because I like the way it sounds." Now the entire time this guy is giving me a vicious attitude. Then says, "Well do you like (some sort of) music. If I was blasting my music in my car and a car over here doesn't like it, should I subject him to listen to it? I don't like your exhaust, its too loud and it annoys me. You have 15 days to get it fixed or else I will pull you over again and you'll receive points on your licensce and a hefty fine." So I replied with, "I can't get points for that." He thought for a second and agreed. So I called the local police department to file a complaint, because I have been followed all the way to my driveway on three seperate occasions for no reason. They told me that there is no law, but it is up to the discreation of the police officer as to whether or not it is too loud. I'm like well isn't that profiling basically. So thats my issue, I will not change the exhaust due to this cop. Sorry for the long post, but this incident really annoyed me.

if i was you id keep it on and when he "pulls me over" and try's to talk to me id rev the engine saying " I cant here you my exhaust is to loud the police station said its not a law gotta go by" and drive away and if he chases you then he's really a dick who's looking for trouble.

This is so stupid. You can play your music as loud as you want, it's basically freedom of speech. If somebody else doesn't like it, that's their problem...that's a horrible example from a cop. He basically is profiling you, he just wants to pull you over because he's a dick and doesn't like your exhaust.

I would keep the exhaust on, and rev the engine everytime hes close by...I had that happen too, a cop following me for no reason. I just kept going around and around the block..Then the cop decides to pull me over..The first thing I asked him is if he had fun..

Do it, just casually drive around the block until he gets bored
I'd do it

Love the responses. I was actually thinking about revving it up too. And yes, basically he is profiling me and yes that was an awful example too .

Dont even rev, just drive around the block several times, until he leaves or pulls you over

I'd say some smart-ass comment like "Dizzy yet??"

We get noise violations here if anything is too loud, radios included.

You'd have to check your local laws, but reguardless of where the sound is coming from... exhuast, stereo, etc... some townships and municpalities DO have regulations on noise. Anything above "x" decibels would be under that violation. That's not to say that you ARE in violation of it, but you might want to look into it, and have a copy of it handy to show a LEO.

First Iwould go to a local stereo shop, and explain the situation breifly, and ask if they have a decibel meter that they can try on your car. If so.... then test it out and see if your car goes above the limit there ( providing there IS one ). IF it doesn't... then keep it on and keep that rule handy to show.

Don't forget that if neighbors, or the public complains to the LEOs then they could ticket you as well thru that area.

Just some things to consider. Certain parts of my area DO have regulations reguarding niose levels. Not every place does though.

When I talked with my local PD, they said there is no law or decibel violation, just police officers' judgement. And I think it was another police officer who lives about two blocks away from me that reported it. Thanks for the suggestions.

I know in PA the noise level is 92 dB for exhaust, and radios are by municipality. Although after 9/10/11 PM whenever noise laws kick in you can be reported/arrested for disrupting the peace. I turned many people in at my old apartment building. Radios don't bother me on the weekends, but when I have to get up at 5am and their radios are on until 3am so loud **** rattles off my shelves...then I have issues.

Check to see what your regulations are for noise levels. Then buy a $10 decibel meter from Radio Shack and see if your exhaust exceeds that. If it doesn't then keep the meter with you in your car and the next time he pulls you over show him that he can't do sh*t about it because it is within the legal limits.

As long as you're not being a dick about it, most people will leave you alone, including the cops. I know people that live by me who have exhausts which are reeeeeeal close to the limit, if not slightly over, but they're not ******** with their cars. They don't go revving up and down the street or peel out from stop signs or go WOT at 2am.

Not saying that you do or have, but it's something to keep in mind cause if you have an idea who reported you, you probably have an idea why. Always best to play it safe when you're in a residential area and open it up when you're on more open roads. I know 2 summers ago the hot thing to have in my neighborhood was Harleys with the exhausts cut off. There were 6 or 7 guys (these are guys in their 40s-60s, not "kids") that would go tearing through the neighborhoods at all hours of the night and people raised so much hell that the cops pretty much shut them down.

call up your local news and investigate the cop... that would not only embarrass him, but also his family lol
